The adventures of Fraiser Island........
As i have a couple of minutes before beginning our whitsundays, i thought i would give you an update of what i have been up to this past week.. We have just completed Fraiser Island, which is well known attraction along the East Coast. Everybody is placed into groups of 10 and you have to drive around the island in a four by four truck, surviving on limited food which me and my team bought, camp on the sand/forest and hopefully come back in one piece!
We had such an awesome time and couldnt ask for better weather. It wasnt too hot, pleasantly warm and we only saw a couple of spots of rain!! (previously they had lots of seriously bad downpours!) We were very lucky with our group of people, all being english apart from one canadian girl and such a laugh. Everybody was really nice and geered up for the adventure. And it certainly was one! Liam and Russell would of loved to of drove about in one of these cars - the roads were crazy with rocks, logs, dingos everywhere.. and the sand looked pretty mad to drive on.
However poor me and Sophie were not allowed to drive the trucks as you had to be over 21, so we got the joys of sitting in the back of the Dirty Dingo Waggon (our named koala truck!) On our first day we explored various lakes, and had a bit of a dip in one - as this was really clear and blue with gorgeous surrounding scenery. However the other lake next to our campsight was named the 'coca cola lake' so you can imagine the colour of this! Us girls decided against taking a dip.. whilst the lads were bombing in and being typical lads in water...
On the evening of the first night, we begun our pretty successful barby, and drunk plenty of goon getting to know each other. This was such a giggle as you see completly different sides to people when they have been under the influence of goon! The night ended up with bruised arms (lads having arm wrestling fights!) bums out, and all the teams joining together and playing chicken limbo! (and what an idea this was of mine and Sophies!) As you can imagine everybody was feeling pretty 'tender' in the morning!
The following day we ventured up to Indian Head where you can chill out in the Champagne pools, paddle in the gorgeous blue seas (do not go in further than your feet as there are hundreds of sharks!) or look out over the mountains to view the dolphins, turtles and sharks. Unfortunately i never saw any, kept missing them! :( From Indian Head we cruised down to see the shipwreck which was pretty cool, then on to Rainbow Gorge Walk where we ventured through a long, overwhelming forest to see amazing sand dunes which seem to go on forever. We infact got lost on our way back out due to the paths crossing. This was pretty entertaining!
However our next stop - Lake Wabby, was even better.. incredible infact! This was a lake surrounded by very steep sand dunes, much cleaner and deserted. It felt like we were lost due to the height and amount of them surrounding us. It was pretty breathtaking. The lads loved the sand dunes to go bouncing down on their bums, well faces the majority of the time into the water. The only let down was the amount of sand flies which attacked you out there.. infact the amount of sand flies everywhere on the island. They bloody rip your skin off. We have some pretty cool footage from the boys rolling down the sand dunes. But boys will be boys and this did result in one of the lads getting a swollen Knee. Very entertaining though!
On the way through the trek i did forget to add, we saw the most enournous snake which i have taken a picture of, and many other horrible creatures. You dont half see things on this island. Especially Dingos... now that is another story.
The second night was pretty simular to the first however it didnt consist of a barby. Our attempt to cook on the second night wasnt as successful.. but did the job. It had too! Soggy, sandy pasta... yummy!! The goon was much more tasty, and the silly drinking games went down well for the night with all the other groups joining together. Naming game was a giggle! After a pretty full on night the first night many os us couldnt handle staying up to late and went to early early morning. And i am glad i did, as soon as the clock ticks 12 the dingos come out! Now this was scary.
I suddenly woke up in the night to hearing a couple of dingos whowling and shadows around the tent. As you can imagine i did pap my pants, and tried to wake Sophie however all she did was talk jibberish (sleeping talking!) about being on the left hand side of the tent. As well as the howling and shadows she was scaring me too. And just imagine this, we were right next to the sea on the sand, and the wind was hurrendous crashing against the tent. Plus the dingos were sniffing around the bottom of the tent, sniffing my toes. I soon quickly moved into a 'curled up shape' not letting anything come near me.
Then as im just trying to calm myself down and try get myself to go back to sleep and stop myself from waking Sophie and Alison up panicing them.. We all suddenly jumped up and froze with fright, as about 10 dingos were howling like mad outside our tent. None of us moved and kept quiet. And had the worse nights sleep ever! I dont think i slept a wink as i was positive they were out to get us! The reason for the pack of dingo's wandering around our tents was because we burried our soggy pasta that was left over under the sand (near out tent!) and the littles b*****s digged it all up for their supper. This was such a funny experience to look back on, but FRIGTENING at the time. Even the boys were crapping their pants!! haha.
The final day we went to Lake Mckenzie which i wished we found before - it was absolutly stunning which you will see by the pictures. Gorgeous, clear lake with white sand and beautiful scenery surrounding it. It really was stunning and we couldnt ask for a better day - scorching hot. We had a good laugh messing around in the water here! We spent all the afternoon by the lake until we had to depart to get the ferry. I had such a good giggle on fraiser island, and was fun trying to survive the camping life style. I met some awesome people who are joining us on Whitsundays, and I already would love to do it all again. The only downside of the trip was we lost $5 from our bond due to our tyre busting on our first night at the campsight. I forgot to mention this earlier. That was funny watching the boys struggling to change it for the new one!
If you ever get chance to go on Fraiser Island ..do it! .. just for the friends you make, to view the stunning scenery made up of the sand dunes, amazing lakes, wild seas and dangerous creatures, and to see if you can survive it all (survive the dirty dingos!)..... thumbs up! STAY DINGO SAFE!!!
