Well I have been in Normanton a month now and I now know why people come here and then stay or just return every year. The lifestyle is relaxed and the people are very friendly.
Now that I am rested from lazing around the pool ( 25m pool & hot artesian spa with a good book in this beautiful weather I am now ready to go back to work.
I worked a whole 4 hours last week for a very colourful character named Doug. He runs a butcher shop, car hire, taxi and if the rumour is to believed the funeral car. I was sorting out the hire cars mainly.
This odd event will wear pretty thin easily so I am still looking for a more substancial job. Every business in this town is very diversified, there are more than one business contained in each building. Eg Post office - western clothing boots - toys & electrical gear, Takeaway - groceries - clothing - toys - housewares, Butchers - bread - lollies, that sort of thing
Went for a walk with Pat last time he was home along the shore up at Karumba. The ledging is made from compressed shells. The bay is very shallow here. There is a terminal for the zinc mines, because it is so shallow they barge the zinc out to the ships waiting in the deeper water then transfer to the waiting ship while out there. One barge a day goes out ( takes about 20 hours round trip).
There is also a live cattle export terminal at Karumba, they have most of the surrounding area near there to quarantine the cattle. We watched as a heard of cattle were driven by helicopter into the holding yards at the wharf.
We had a suprise visit last weekend by friends. It was great to see Norma, Barry, Daffney & Reg. They have been touring around all over the place. They stayed for a few days, luckily Pat came in and was able to see them before they left.
The battery in my watch died a couple of weeks ago so the old saying of "time doesn't mean a thing" is where I have been lately. didn't know what date, day or time it was mostly, but then I really don't need to know or do I?
So not true... I got my days mixed up last week and scared myself absolutly silly for hours. I thought Pat was supposed to be home on sunday night for a meeting on monday, (he has no phone coverage or internet where he is), he didn't arrive home I was really worried that something had happened to him.
I waited 3-4 hours past the time I thought he should have been home because working construction is not clock watched out here. It then hit me I was worried for nothing as he was suppose to come home monday for the tuesday meeting not the sunday. I confused last week with this week. Not going to happen again I can tell you. I went up to the post office and bought a new watch, I now have the calender set up for his days off as well. Nothing like a good scare to know the world hasn't stopped.
I love that man a lot so it is only natural that I get worried about him. I also have his satelite work phone number now (and I'm not afraid to use it :P). As usual he was laughingly sympathetic ( yes that's right it was funny ) even I can see the funny side of this incident so I forgive him.
I called the people from my last work place to say hi this morning and had a chat to everyone, there have been quite a few changes since I left, that is the nature of projects though. I hope to get together with some of them when I get back for a visit to Gladstone.
