Pat and I went down to Brisbane to say hello & goodbye to Ray & Colleen as we are about to leave Qld bound for Darwin NT.
They took us out to tea at a tavern in Morayfield. Nice food. This is where I found out I hate tonic water in my drink - YUK. Well we live and learn. We met up for breakfast with them before saying our fond farewells. We don't know when we will be back yet, as all plans are fluid.
Pat has work in Darwin till May 2015. Wet season in the NT - yummo can't wait...
Pat & I set up camp on Saturday afternoon in the 1770 caravan park . We had just spent 3 hours sitting stationary on the Bruce highway about 10km south of Benaraby while the police cleared the lanes after an horrific fatal accident. A car had hit a truck. The accident happened around 8am, we were unable to get through till 1pm. Lucky we had the van and could make a cuppa and a sandwich.
Khara came for a visit Sunday afternoon. We had lunch at a great little bistro called the Tree that has fantastic meals & atmosphere.
We were in 1770 to meet up with a couple of Pat's sisters for a few days or fun before leaving the state. A few drinks, a little walking, a lot of laughs.
Sharon, Lyn & Rob came to stay in the park and Tim & Gayle joined us on the first evening for drinks & tea.
Tuesday found us checking out the local landmarks like Captain Cook's cairn, the beaches & the point lookouts. While everyone walked along the shoreline bush walk to the point I drove Robs car up to pick them up. Woe betide anyone or anything that puts a mark on this vehicle so I was extremely careful with it.
On Wednesday everyone had a great time on the all day LARC tour that goes up to the Bustard Head Lighthouse & sand-boarding on the dunes. This was Pat & my 4th trip on the LARC and as usual there was something new to the tour. They now have permission to open the lighthouse to the group. Pat always said he would love to see the view from the top and this time he was able to.
Rob & Lyn had a couple of turns on the boards sliding down the sand dunes. Not for this little black duck as it is bloody hard work to get to the top for a couple of seconds of fun coming down on the boards. I prefer to watch everyone coming down. You see and sometimes hear great stuff like Lyn saying as plain as day "holy s***'' thinking nobody had heard her but it echoed loud & clear to the crowd below. She received a big laugh from the crowd.
On the way back to 1770 Rob was able to drive the big pink LARC along the beach for a while.
On Thursday we showed Lyn & Rob Deepwater National Park. We had a look at the beach at Flat Rock, it was littered with pumice stone. Some of the chunks we quite large.
Apparently there was an under water volcanic eruption east of Australia somewhere that created a mat of pumice stone feet thick and covered an area the size of Belgium.
A storm at sea broke it up and it has been coming ashore from Grafton (NSW) to Gladstone (QLD).
Friday we packed up and went to Gladstone had lunch with Khara before heading out on the trek to Darwin 3000 odd kilometres away.
