BLOG If I had $5 for every city as interesting as Rome, I would have $5. I'm not entirely sure what I would do with this money, but that's not the point. For the record this line can be tinkered with to make a foolproof pick up line. "if I had $5 for every girl I have met as beautiful as you, I would have $5." (1/1, 100%).
Plus Camping Roma was yet another top class resort, and our bungalo was great. A beach volleyball court was a welcome addition, a chance to revisit my glory days from the Woman Respecters. Our record at beach volleyball was unparelleled, undefeated for two whole days before a shock loss on our final day. We were called "the Williams sisters of beach volleyball", not a bad self confessed nickname in anyones books. The volleyball court did take it's toll, as I am now nursing an elbow injury (2-3 weeks depending on rehabilitation) and both of us have slight grazes to the right knee. We played volleyball with a lot of different people, but let me tell you about just one girl. This girl and her boyfriend joined in for a quick game and she grazed her knee immediately. However it wan not just her knee bleeding.... Her white bikini bottoms had turned into what resembled the Japanese flag, not a pleasant thing to witness.
At our resort, each building was split into two bungalo's. This ensured we got to know our neighbours well, very well. Of course it so happened we got a Dutch couple in their early twenties. Let's just say while they were not on their honeymoon, they certainly acted like it. Now trying to sleep while the whole building is rocking like a 60's disco is not easy. Not a word of a lie, it felt like an earthquake. Now you may find this comical but there is more. There is a little vent in the wall that looks straight into their room. Of course any normal (boring) people would not be tempted to have a look. But Luke "peeping Tom" Course and Mat "peeping Tom" White had other ideas. Let's just say what we witnessed would not be allowed on Tv and leave it at that.
The biggest downfall at Plus Camping Roma was the nightlife. Bikini Night sounded enticing so we donned the boardies and had a few pre drinks (bottle of vodka €6, BARGAIN) and headed to the bar. If you like s*** music, beer in plastic cups and no single pick-up worthy females, then this is your kind of party. But if you are anything like me, this is definitely NOT a reccomended outing.
Rome has more history than Shane & Simone Warne, which made for an intruiging five days. The walking tour was the best yet, mainly due to a very humorous American guide. It was a great way to spend our first day, and gave us our bearings. Our favourite part of the your was the history surrounding some of the crazy emperor's of the Roman Empire. There was one guy called Nero who burned the whole city down and built a huge palace for himself, the size of 30 football fields. Inside the palace was a man made lake the size of 10 football fields. The most intruiging part though is that as a sign of how completely sane he was, he got 1000 swans and tied them to the front of the boat, giving him the first swan powered boat. Another emporer had a wife who comitted suicide so he set out to to find the Roman that most looked like her. This turned out to be a 12 year old pre-pubescent boy, so he chopped off the boy's genetalia and married him in a ceremony on the streets of Rome.
For the five days we were in Rome, every day reached at least 33 degrees. This made doing tourist activities during the day a bit uncomfortable, so we tried to keep our days short and sweet. (Just like me in the bedroom haha very funny guys).
Our second day we explored the coliseum, which was as cool as anything we have done so far in Europe. Just to imagine what it would have been like to see the gladiotors fight each other or lions, tigers, hippos, rhinos and giraffes was crazy.
To try and combat the heat on Saturday we spent the majority of the day rotating between the volleyball court and pool, before heading into Roma to see the city at night. We got some awesome photos of the Coliseum, Trevi Fountain and Four Rivers Fountain. I thoroughly enjoyed throwing my coin in the Trevi Fountain to ensure I would return to Rome. Ever since watching the Lizzie McGuire movie I have looked forward to that moment.
Our final day in Rome was a spent at Vatican City. As it was a Sunday the whole place was packed because of services running throughout the day. After checking out St Peter's Basilica we headed back because there were too many people to contemplate the Sistine Chapel or Vatican Museum at it was well over thirty degrees. However it was cool to see where the Pope adresses the people, and the insides of the Basilica.
Sadly our time in Rome is up and Sienna is our next stop later today.
