Amsterdam. One word. One city. Yet with this one word many emotions and thoughts are sparked. Prostitutes in windows and cannibus are the worldwide trademarks of this city, but it is so much more than that.
We found that out on the third day of course, because the first two were spent "window shopping" and smoking in coffee shops. The funny thing about our time in Amsterdam is that we didn't experience any girls in windows or any coffee shops. This was obviously because we were doing speed and heroin the whole time!
I can finally comment on dorms in hostels after we had our first dorm experience. We had mixed feelings about the dorm, but all in all it was bearable. It was quite annoying having to keep repacking our packs so we could lock them everytime we went out. However we both enjoyed waking up to 4 other guys for a change, because we are so used to girls! And of course trying to sleep while some old guy masturbates metres away from you is always fun. Most of the people in our dorm were nice, which made the experience better.
Our hostel was located smack bang in the middle of the city, and we had literally 50 restaurants within a hundred metre radius of our hotel. The nearest canal was 50 metres away and many bars an eggs throw away. The red light district was a 15 minute walk, or as we liked to say "a €100 walk".
We spent a bit of time at the red light district, mainly just because of the comedic value of watching guys go in the windows. On one particular night we followed around one wierd old guy for a good 15 minutes. He would go up to every window and intently look at the girl before making a decision. I want to clarify that his name was NOT Luke Course.
On our first night we went to a comedy show called "Boom Chicago", which is run by a group of Americans. It was one of the funniest nights of our lives and one we will never forget. The show was mainly improvisation, and the improvised rapping to conclude the show was nothing short of astounding, especially that of the Notorious F.A.G.
Mike's bikes provided us with a great your of the country outside of Amsterdam on a beautiful day. The tour went for 4 and a half hours and covered 23 kms. We stopped off at a cheese farm where they also make clogs, the wooden shoes farmers in Holland wear. As it was such a nice day we went for a swim in the Amstel river to cool off which was much appreciated.
Through busabout we managed to get cheaper tickets to the "Ultimate Party Club Crawl". This included a free drink and free entry at 6 bars/clubs, as well as a vodka shot in between clubs. The best part however was at the first bar, where you just tipped your head back and they poured vodka down your throat. We had unlimited vodka for the first half an hour which wasn't too bad. However the people on the crawl were pretty average so that was a bit of a wet blanket. There was one girl that Luke managed to hook in with, but her weight was that of a small truck or in cricket terms "a century".
We were that impressed with the Amstel river from the bike tour that the morning after our big night we managed to get our sorry arses out of bed and hire bikes. On a nice warm day we rode back to the river and had a picnic of some sorts and had a swim. Sounds gay doesn't it? But so does Justin Bieber and everyone seems to love him.
On our last day we visited the Anne Frank Huis (house), and words cannot describe how moving the experience was. To actually see where Anne and 7 other Jews were in hiding for two years was very confronting. We saw Annes actual diary as well as all the rooms in their hideout. So intrigued were we by the museum, we both bought copies of her diary and we are powering through them.
Today we are off to Berlin in Germany and are looking forward to the one litre steins of beer.
