Greetings ye olde friends from thy country.
Lords Course and White have just spent a magical 4 days in Bruges, Belgium. Bruges is a medieval town, where the majority of the buildings were built in the 17th century. Canals run all through the town as well as around the perimeter. It is known for it's chocolate, beer and fries. There are probably about 20 chocolatiers within a 500 metre radius of the city centre. The chocolates were unbelievable, and thanks to a lovely girl who worked at our favourite shop we got our chocolate half price.
The main attractions in Bruges are the bell tower in Markt Square, the weekly market full of fresh produce, a church with a piece of cloth with Jesus' blood on it, the chocolate museum and the lake of love. We visited all these places, but for obvious reasons we had a strict 1 metre rule at the lake of love in case things got wierd.
For our first two nights we managed to get a canalside b&b very cheap, which was the best deal we have had since our buy one get one free male g-strings.
Alas, after two nights we moved into a hostel after the two days. Our hostel experience was, umm inteeresting. About an hour after we had checked in we were innocently lying on out beds in our underwear due to the heat. Then before we knew it, some Indian bloke opened our door with his key and declared the room was his. Naturally we tied him up and force fed him live goldfish. Then we told him where to go (the reception obviously) and went back to whatever it was we were doing. The next problem came with our shower, which was stone cold and required you to hold down a button in order for any water.
Then on our last night the three of us arrived home (mat, Luke and a Dutch girl Luke picked up) to a note on the door saying we weren't booked in our room and our keycards were deactivated. Then after much hassle we were given two rooms, which was handy as Mat could have a room to himself while Luke played umm hangman with Tonke his Dutch friend.
The funny part about our last night occurred when we were in a bar. A very good looking girl walked in, and Luke turned to Matt and claimed "bet you a beer I can get her number". She slept in our room that night, true story.
A highlight of Bruges was our bike tour of the city, which turned out to be a private tour after no one else turned up. It was great to learn some of the history and see some awesome sights in the bike-friendly city.
We also had a canal tour on a boat, which was also a great experience, and a good opportunity to see the city from a different perspective.
Our drinking experiences were very positive as we discovered the joys of cherry beer and raspberry beer. The buy one get one free deal on a local brew was much appreciated, as was the beauty of the barmaid.
Having a beer in a pub that has been open since the 15th century was a great experience, and Matt loved his all you can eat ribs as he chowed down 5 plates. He then managed to enjoy the taste again the next morning when he threw them up.
Amsterdam is our next stop which will no doubt bring plenty of early nights and a chance to enjoy our abstanance.
