We left camp this morning at 9.30 am and made it out to the Stuart Highway and refueled at Erldunda and headed off for Alice Springs.
We had a good drive and arrived at the MacDonnell Range Big 4 Caravan late in the afternoon. We set up camp and then had a walk around. They have great facilities here. Three heated pools and a waterslide which wasn't quite finished unfortunately. They have cool buggies for the kids to hire and ride around the park and an indoor games area and a jumping pillow. We had an evening meal and retired early for the night.
Next morning we got up and drove down the street. Of course we had to do two Op Shops for the boys as they won't let us drive past one! We called in at the Tourist Information Centre and ended up at Todd Tavern for lunch. The Tavern had really changed a lot since 1998. It has been refurbished and had a different clientelle. We stocked up on groceries and went back to the park. The boys and I went for a swim.
We didnt do much the next day but Thomas and I did go down the street for a bit and we bought a digeridoo.
Saturday 11th July - Camel Cup
After getting up early and making lunch we headed off to Blatherskite Park to the Alice Springs Apex Camel Cup to ge a good spot on the fence. The boys and I went for a walk to check out the camels in the mounting yard and then looked around the Park. We checked out the market stalls and the souvenir shops. I bought a cap and stubby holder and bought Trish a rugby top. There were 7 races for the day and lots of fun entertainment in between. The camel riders don't own the camels, they select the camel from a mob provided. It was hilarious watching the camels race around the track. Some made it through to the finish line, however some turned around and went back in the opposite direction and some just sat down. One rider fell off the camel and had to be carted off to hospital in an ambulance. There was no betting allowed, it was just a charity day to make money for Apex.
The boys entered the Kids Camel Cup race with a camel which was like a hobby horse. Thomas won his age group and MItchy got a second. They then entered the Mr. Camel Cup fashions on the field for a bit of a laugh and Mitch ended up getting second.
We finished the day of with a helicopter joy flight over Alice Springs and the ranges. There was only room for Tommy, Mitch and I. Trish stayed on the ground and took some photos. It was a magnificant experience especially for the boys.
I spoke with some of the members from the Alice Springs Apex Club. This was their major fundraiser for the year and they did a great job. They were a great bunch of guys and girls.
