It's Good Friday and everything closes. And I mean everything! For this reason we decided to stay put all day and go to see the sunset tonight. We've lounged about all day. Yet again I made the most of the pool, even though it's freezing, while everyone else pottered about thinking I was mad. I found a tiny little lizard by the pool this afternoon and I didn't even chuck a hissy fit. I must be getting a bit brave! Having said that it was only little. It was almost black and it's tail was longer than its body. It was actually quite sweet really. It looked like a little twig until it moved. It really ran fast.
Mid afternoon we got ourselves organised and headed off to the beach. We (mainly me) fancied cottesloe cos it's famous for its sunsets. We saw loads of pictures of it before we came out and I was desperate to see it for real. None of us really knew where it was but it was simple enough to find, as was a parking space. Its something we're not used to on a bank holiday weekend! There's tons of parking everywhere all of the time, and its free! We all drifted down onto the sand and it wasnt long before I realised we were at the wrong bit! It was still cottesloe but not the bit in the pictures. Much to the dismay of the boys, I wanted to be at the bit in the pictures. As far as they were concerned a sunsets a sunset regardless of the beach you're standing on. How very wrong they are. We strolled for a while anyway and took some pictures. It's a really beautiful beach. It's sand is soft and white, it's clean, peaceful and there was only a spattering of people. I dawdled behind everyone else as per usual, taking photos. My new camera is amazing and goes quite a way to capturing a scene but I don't think you can ever appreciate the over whelming beauty of the places just from a picture. It's a shame everyone else won't be able to feel the warm sun on their faces, taste the salt on their lips and the almost deafening roar of the Indian Ocean. After taking far too many pictures and finding a little jelly fish, we were back in the car and in search of my perfect sunset. Luckily it wasn't far. Had we kept walking on the beach we would have stumbled upon it anyway. I was amazed. Real life rarely looks as good as the promotional pictures in books but I'm pleased to say, this time it did. It was absolutely perfect. There was loads of people all with the same idea. All hoping to witness the spectacular sunset. Families had blankets and fish and chips. Couples were plotted up with cheese, crackers and wine.. There were kids playing on the sand, surfers and swimmers. The whole place was a hive of lazy, sunblushed activity. We wandered through the people, absorbing every last detail, and grabbed a coffee from the 'Italian canteen'. When the sun started to set everything changed. The colour of the buildings changed. The shadows altered the appearance of the buildings and the people. We found a perfect spot on the grassy bank and watched and waited. And then it happened. The huge tangerine, burning sun started to set. The sky took on a pinky, lilac glow as it started to slowly sink. Nothing looked the same. The people, the sky, the sand, everything. The wet sand looked like it was on fire as the low, heavy sun shone on it. As the seagulls hovered they were just black silhouettes against the dark burnt orange of the backdrop. I was completely stunned by the magnificence of it and couldn't stop taking pictures. It was a glorious thing to witness. And there's no-one I'd have rather shared it with. All 4 of us, sat in a line, on the other side of the world, watching, all lost in our own thoughts. Once the sun was on a roll there was no stopping it and in no time at all it sank entirely into the sea. I fully expected to see steam rise up from the edges. It resembled a gingernut biscuit being dunked into a cuppa. Without the warmth of the sun the evening quickly turned chilly. We abandoned our precious view point and headed home. Once home we chucked hotdogs on the BBQ for a quick tea and got settled for a film. The conjuring won the vote. Scared the s*** out of me, much to everyone else's amusement.
