Arrived early this morning in Sao Paolo after traveling all day Friday: early bus Portland to Logan, flight to Ft. Lauderdale, long wait in the airport before our overnight flight to Brazil (Azul Airlines). Very nice smooth flight, good food, not full so could spread out and get some actual sleep. Sunny morning with a domestic flight on to Campo Grande, 40 minutes inland. At Campo Grande's small airport our group assembles. Twelve people plus two guides (Marcelo and Willy), the group seems pleasant. All of us arrived a day early, so today is a bonus day; we'll bird at a local park this afternoon.
After welcome and needed showers, we walked a few blocks to a local restaurant known for their all-you-can-eat fish. Long tables full of families (it being the weekend), it was chaotic at first trying to work out the extensive Portuguese menu. English translations of signage/menus don't seem to be a big priority; Spanish and Portuguese the logical options. Late afternoon we drove to a large city park (150 hectares). No sooner did we get out of the bus and birds were everywhere, from a large guan to three species of hummingbirds, toucan and aracaris, white woodpeckers. Two species of beautiful macaws: blue and yellow, and red bellied. And a stunning bright blue swallow tanager. So many exciting and beautiful birds, plus capybaras, an agouti, and coatis. Birds were coming in so fast I barely had time to write them down; 39 species. What a way to start the trip.

Ann While you were birding in Brazil, I was watching Alfred Hitchcock's The Birds at Railroad Square (sponsored by Colby Film Studies)...Have a great trip! Different perspectives on our winged friends, I would say !
Tracey Sounds fabulous...and the mammals a bonus. FUN.
