We arrived in Brisbane late in the afternoon and headed straight for our hostel - Chill Backpackers which was very lovely with fast internet, a roof terrace and lovely big rooms. In the evening we decided to go to th hostel next door as we heard there was a quiz on with a cash prize of $100. Upon arriving we found out it was a Christmas themed quiz but we weren't put off and joining with another girl we put our names down anyway as the Northern Monkeys and as it happens apparently we are Christmas experts because WE WON!!!!!! Woohoo!!! We decided to spend the money wisely and both agreed to invest it in a new item of clothing! After all we do need something new to wear on new year's eve! The next day we headed to the South Bank where there is a manmade beach and yet another lagoon. So we parked ourselves there for a few hours and then ventured into the city centre to have a look around. It was pretty buzzing as everyone was doing some last minute Christmas shopping. We even got stopped by a newspaper asking us if we had to do a mad dash for Christmas presents, we of course had to sheepishly explain that we weren't really buying any as we were away from home but it didn't dull our festive spirit. That night we returned to the South Bank as the city had arranged lots of Chritsmassy things for the public including a big screen showing the movie Ratatouille and a fireworks show on the river. We met two of my friends from university, Blair and Fraser, who were working in Brisbane for a few months. We went for a drink with them which was lovely as I hadn't seen them for 6 months or so so it was great to catch up.
The next day, Christmas Eve, our main goal was to purchase santa hats to get us even more in the Christmas mood and we found them for a dollar in teh aptly named Reject Shop! After completing that mission we returned to the lagoon for some more chilling out and to enjoy the novelty of sunbathing at Christmas time! Although, we all agreed that no matter how hard we tried and how much we said it it just didn't feel like Christmas, the weather just made it impossible! But, we are not complaining, it definitely makes a change from rain and shopping in the dark!
We had a bit of a rush getting back to our hostel in time to catch our bus to Surfers Paradise but luckily we made it and were soon on our way to our Christmas destination......
