I am in Delhi now after a good week in Pushkar.
I didnt spend too much time with the camels and at the fair as it was quite crazy and very geared at tourists. But good fun atmosphere, good crazy Indian experience! I loved seeing the town of Pushkar from the mountains & the sunset was amazing!! Very holy town - more than 500 temples in such a small area! Incredible desert landscape with Ayurveli Mtn Range all around. The people in India are so devout, so spiritual. I saw many people performing their pujas at the lake (which was dried). The Hindus have more than 84,000 gods!
But the highlight was staying with two wonderful people - Uma & Vinod - on their farm 3kms out of Pushkar. They looked after me so well and were so warm and friendly. They had a nice property which allowed me to relax away from the fair. Uma's food was the best!
On the last night they took me to the nearby city of Ajmer for an Indian wedding reception!!! It was amazing! So extravagant - bright neon lights, tacky backdrops & loud music! The bride & groom were dressed so traditionally & ornately. Uma dressed me up in a traditional dress :) I was so lucky! Most marriages are arranged here still.
I came back on a local train yesterday - no A/C, no foreigners, lots of stares. Good real experience though - I actually really liked it. Sat with some nice locals to Jaipur.Took a long time... The difference between classes here is so distinct & so accepted in society. Quite hard to deal with as its notat all like in Oz. Lots of beggars coming past & of course the chai wallahs! Its so sweet here!! But good.
I will be leaving for the Community Project tomorrow morning!
