Today we had another day out with Ivan & Biserka. We went to the 'shrine' created to remember Matija Gubec. He was a peasant who created a rebellion in 1573 where the peasants across Croatia / Yugoslavia rose up against the ruling class of the times. 400 years later a statue was built in 1973 to commemorate his effort to improve the rights of the peasants. In the 9 day war there were 4 battles where the peasants used garden implements to fight against men on horseback with swords & well equipped armour.
We worked our way through the museum that was mainly filled with ornate furniture of the ruling class. The downstairs cellar was open and the air was cool & inviting. Outside was a well that when in operation was 65m deep.
Later we went to visit Matija's home that stood proudly behind a large Linden tree (nearly 500 years old) that was a meeting place for Matija and his local followers. This tree is now hollow & has withstood a massive storm that tore out its centre. It was reinforced with metal bands & uprights to support its old branches & has grown new branches. The agronomy association of Zagreb has taken seeds from the tree & has now grown new seedlings to replace the old tree if deemed necessary.
On our way home, we stopped off at a well known pizza place (Oro Goro) in Oroslavje. The pizzas here come in small, large & jumbo. John & I ordered 1 large whereas Ivan & Biserka ordered 2 large. We managed to consume all but 1 wedge & the other two had 1 whole pizza left.
The last site seeing event of the day was to head to Kumrovec to see the house where President Tito was born & lived. The village here was set up to display how the locals lived. All of the cottages had a different focus - such as the blacksmith, the linen cloth production line, the fire brigade of the times & the wedding. There were cottages with thatched rooves. The whole town was extremely interesting.
On our way home we stopped off at dad's sister's home where we caught up with her son & family and daughter & family who also dropped by. We had a few drinks & a bite to eat & arrived home very late.
