It's only day three of being in New Zealand but I already feel as if I have been here for weeks. Settling in has been way easier than expected and I already feel like I know the majority of the international students. Many of the NZ students don't arrive until this weekend because they are still on "holiday". Those that I have met, though, are so welcoming and friendly.
This morning I walked into town, which consists of only a post office, pub, and grocery store, and went to the farmers market. I thought the produce at the grocery store was fresh, but this little market had some of the freshest produce, breads, and herbs I have ever seen. It is amazing what natural food looks like without all of the GMOs and pesticides that is in our food in The States. I got some fresh pesto that I am officially addicted to.
Tomorrow we are going to Hanmer Springs which is said to be absoulutely beautiful. It is a little under an hours drive from campus and we will be there all day. It is natural hot springs but we can also go hiking, biking, boating, and bungy jumping there. I think I am going to save my bungy jumping for Queenstown where it was originated. Can't wait! I will post pictures!
So far, I have to say that my favorite thing is interacting with all of the international students. It is amazing how friendly and willing everyone is and how anxious we all are to learn about eachothers' cultures. It is hilarious to hear everyone's version of an American accent... it is essentailly just a terrible attempt at a sothern draw. It's also really fun to learn accents and words from other parts of the world... they laugh as we try but it is all in good nature. The locals are also really fun to talk to because they are just as interested in us as we are in them. They are more than willing to share advice about where to go and what to do.
Off to dinner than a movie night in the international dorms... it will be interesting to see what movie is decided apon by multiple different cultures. I will post agian soon!
