I'm presently sitting in a maori friend of Peadars house just outside Wellington eating some of the tastiest chocolate cake and getting completly spoilt. Myself, Peadar, Joshua and Lucy left Queenstown last Wednesday the 7th of September to start our rugby world cup road trip. Joshua and Lucy are friends of Peadars from Tanzania as is Sam whos family we are staying with at the moment. We arrived here yesterday and will be leaving for New Plymouth tomorrow to watch the first Irish game.
When we left Queenstown we made our way up the West coast of the south island of New Zealand. It was a stunning drive that started with a beautiful drive from Queenstown to Wanaka before arriving on the west coast in the Westlands. We stayed our first night of the road trip in a nice campsite right on a beach. We cooked our first meal over a bonfire and under an incredible starry night. Two of us slept in the car and the other two slept in the tent. Unfortunately we awoke to miserable wet morning. Subsequently we didn't hang around for two long and I drove us away in a hurry to escape the rain and continue and our stunning drive north towards Picton. But being in such a hurry I forgot to pay attention to the speed signs and I accidently raced through a 50kph zone at 84kph. Seconds later a police car pulled me over and dropped a hefty $300 speeding ticket on me. Not nice especially since I had received a $100 parking ticket the day before in Queenstown! Gonna need to find some serious part time job in the north island to pay off these fines.
After a few more hours of driving alongside mesmorising coastlines, glaciers, ruggid mountains and tropical rainforrests we finally arrived at a beautiful beach just beneath Westport. The surf was massive, triple overhead on the big sets with about a 16 second period. Although myself and Peadar were well out of practice we ventured in via jumping off the rocks. But all of our three attempts of catching some of these monster waves ending in a solid smashing mainly because we could never even get out the back as the waves were just too big to duckdive.
Later that night after driving to Picton we camped at another pretty beach campsite. On waking up early the next morning we were once again greeted br rain. This certainly didnt dampen our moods though and we were soon on the road again. We caught the ferry from Picton to Wellington and eventually arrived at Sams house at Palmerstown North to be greeted by a big tasty roast and loads of desserts and other treats. Then after dinner we headed into Wellington for the opening ceremony of the World Cup. It was a good night out and Wellinton seems like a beautiful city.
I forgot to mention what I was up to for my last few weeks in Queenstown. In summary I had another crazy night of dubstep watching KraftyKuts, we went tubing on the Remarkables which was great fun and other than that I had plenty of nights out which involved plenty of dancing and having the craic! Although I have left Queenstown and I am due to head to Perth in early November I have a feeling my plans are in the process of big change. That is the benefit of having no constraints and being free for the first time in my life to really decide on the direction I am going. So basically I'm considering heading back to Queenstown after the World cup to head there for a few months of their summer and get some work in a cafe. I may also be getting involved in a new company being set up in New Zealand which I am really excited about. I will have more details about this on the next blog.
That is all for now my dear friends and family. I must say that as much fun as I'm having I do miss all of you. I missed my graduation two days ago but that was a decision I made a long time ago and certainly don't regret. Although I apologise to my mum and dad for not being able to attend my grads! Hope all our well and I will continue to have a fantastic time that continues to get better especially now that the rugby world cup road trip is underway and getting better by the day. Peace and love all!!
