Hi Everyone
Tonight I will write our very last blog of the trip. I am going to miss writing these entries for you all to read and for once having lots of interesting things to talk about.
Our last day on Navutu was just fantastic we had another delicious breakfast and then sat sunbathing and reading until it was time to go on our trip. We had chosen to visit the local Yaqueta School to meet the local children and see what a real Fijian community looks like. They were beautiful smiley kids who were fascinated by us and asked lots of questions about our jobs and the UK. They also sang us some of their school songs, which was deafening! They definitely believe in singing from the heart and we had such a great time meeting them.
We did some more snorkelling on the way back and saw some clown fish which was fab as we wanted to be able to tell the kids we have pretty much seen lots of the characters from Finding Nemo! Had yet another great dinner except this time we had arranged to have it on the beach under the palm trees. To sum it up we had sand, sea, stars and Sinatra playing and we were very happy
We had been chatting to a nice couple during the day and as it was their last night too they invited us to take part in a Cava ceremony with them and some of the other guests and staff.
We didn't know what to expect but it turned out to be somewhat of a surreal evening! Everyone sat on the floor on a hand woven mat and the Cava bowl is placed in the centre and everyone is given a bowl to drink in turn. You have to clap once shout 'Bulla!!' and then drink the stuff while everyone claps…remembering to smile afterwards!
In case you're wondering, Cava is made by soaking the root of one of the trees found on the island. It looks like muddy water and doesn't really taste of anything too strong, however it makes your lower face go numb and you can't feel your tongue…especially after the third or fourth cava!
The locals gulped it down and we did pretty well but we were all smiling and giggling by the end of it at nothing in particular!! In between drinking the magic Cava we were serenaded with Fijian songs and guitar playing which was just great I love their music and singing they do it with so much enthusiasm!
Today was a sad day leaving Navutu, we could easily have spent at least a week there if not more getting to know the locals and learning about Fijian culture, they are absolutely fascinating people and some of the friendliest people we have ever met. We managed to fit in one last snorkelling trip before we left and this was the best yet as we saw baby Nemo's and a huge turtle! I was absolutely ecstatic, as we know how rare it is to see one! He was hiding beneath a large bit of coral so we had to dive down to get a good look and he was just there chilling out and looking at us…amazing!
We got back two very content snorkellers and packed up everything ready to leave. As we were leaving the staff gave us a fresh flower lei and sang us the Navutu goodbye song which made us not want to leave…apparently we are part of the family now and have to return one day….one day I hope we can!
We will be leaving our plane tomorrow last destination…home! We will miss the excitement of our adventures but we can't wait to see you all, this has been the trip of a lifetime!
See you in a few days!
