We spent the whole morning at sea, 13.5 miles out of Valparaiso harbor. Clear, sunny day, but rough seas and plenty of salt spray in our small boat, but no problems keeping breakfast down. Four kinds of albatross, Peruvian Pelicans, Peruvian Boobies, three kinds of cormorants, terns and gulls galore. And in sufficient numbers so as to be able to keep reviewing species, since it was impossible to use binoculars except for in the harbor. After being out for seven hours bobbing up and down in the wind, we were rewarded with a good lunch in the hotel (NOT chicken this time, but of course, more avocado, and shrimp).
After a bit of downtime (rinsing out saltwater-doused clothing and equipment), we watched beautiful black Inca Terns come and go from the walls and rocks on which our hotel sits, then motored up the coast along a beach and estuary. Sea lions lounged in the sun high above the surf on rocks covered with Peruvian Boobies, cormorants, and Inca Terns. We searched for penguins but no luck, although at the estuary the sky turned white with thousands of gulls and terns.
