In the midst of the Nevados de Chillan mountains, some still with snow, we ascended this morning from 4000' to 5500', nearing the top of one of the ski resorts where the hot springs are located. It smelled of sulfur when we got out of the bus, but we gradually got used to it. Steam rose out of the mountainsides on a beautiful sunny, clear day, much warmer than we expected. We spent a good hour plus finding birds but particularly a Rufous-chested Huet-huet ("wet-wet") named for its call that sounds exactly that! It must have called continuously for a good hour, allowing us to finally have some great views as it hopped from trees through snow fields, asking for us to find him. Gratifying because we've had a number of frustrating attempts with Huet-huets up until now.
Hiked this afternoon through the valley filled with cabanas and lodges for skiers, this being a popular resort area, but no new birds.
