Southern right whales measure about 14m in length and weigh over 40 tons. Each year from June to November they flock to Hermanus to calve and mate, breach and blow and hurl their vast bodies in and out of the water.
After enjoying another Arsenal victory we hopped into the car and drove as the sun set toward Hermanus. Janine (a work colleague) and John (her husband) have a family holiday home on a lagoon just outside Hermanus and invited us to join them overnight for a BBQ and then some whale watching.
Sunday was a beautiful day although too windy to kayak in the lagoon with the whales. Not to be deterred, we decided to dine at Bietang's Cave (thanks for the recommendation Chippy)!! Eating about 2m from the water's edge we had the most amazing view across the bay. When we begun our lunch the waters were still and there was very little sign of anything, never mind whales. Almost as we put our knives and forks down the show begun. Not once but two, three, four, five times a southern right whale burst out of the water, breaching immediately in front of us. The spectical was one of the most amazing events I have ever witnessed - absolutely incredible.
Our drive home was also stunning - the R44, coastal road is a must during the spring / summer months - vast beaches, pretty fishing villages and a rugged coastline are quite mesmorising.
