June 25th thru July 1st, 2010 Deer Creek Motor Coach Resort-Galax, VA
We got to Galax, VA on Rt. 58 and looked for Rt. 89 to take us south of town to the resort. We should have continued east on Rt. 58 for another mile or so to get us onto the "truck route" around Galax. By turning right, or south when we did it was fortunate that the car getting ready to make a left turn from the left turn lane saw that he should back way up so our big coach could make the right turn without hitting him. We later heard from Barry, the resort developer, that his friends in town let him know whenever they see "an RV driving down Main Street Galax"….when they should have been on the truck route. So, we were not the only people to do that. Deer Creek is a still developing, luxury motor home resort where you buy your site and can also build a 10' by 15' cassita to use as an additional bedroom, bathroom, etc. Gorgeous clubhouse and other amenities in a very rural setting. Met some very nice people while there and developer Barry and his wife Laura were extremely hospitable. On Saturday night we went to the Blue Ridge Music Center to listen to "New Ballards Branch Bogtrotters" and "Gandydancer", a couple of local groups that really got those toes a tappin'. Did a 5 mile canoe on the New River on Sunday afternoon. On Wednesday we went to Mount Airy (Mayberry USA) and had lunch at the famous Snappy Lunch……famous for their grilled pork chop sandwich. It was awesome! Stopped by the Andy Griffith Museum and delighted in the collection of articles from that great TV show. Rod and I agreed that we grew up in a great era! Took the coach to an RV service center at Fancy Gap on Thursday to have them look at the "squeaky" brakes only to learn that the brake pads were ok and a little squeak is to be expected in the mountain roads. Back to Deer Creek for another night and departed Friday morning for our next stop.
