This morning we woke early again and packed up. I enjoyed a good chat with the other staff about the changes at school. Everyone here seems pretty positive so it looks good. I think a lot of progress has been made in respect of people's attitudes.
We have brought all our luggage downstairs and are waiting for Rob- very unusual.... he is usually here first so there must be traffic!
Turned out we were half an hour early and there was enough traffic to make Rob who is always early a mere five minutes late! We loaded easily and were soon on our way to the Cotswolds. After a lovely drive of about 45 minutes, we stopped at Stow on Wold and enjoyed about an hour exploring this very retry village. This is where. I got lucky .... after plucking up the courage to ask , I had the elegant sales woman in a little boutique undress the model to provide me with a size 8 ivory lace dress to try on. The fit was perfect and the sale price even better and I bought my first Italian number!! I was also sick of being without earrings and I bought some pretty onyx earrings in Past Times. So now I finally feel dressed.
We drove on intending to have lunch in Lacock but as we drove through Tetley, we were so taken with the quaint town that we stopped for lunch. We gave the students two hours to get lunch and explore the town and I encouraged them to use their entire allowance on an unforgettable lunch experience. The teacher group set out and we found a beautifully decorated and different brasserie. The menu looked good so we asked for a table. The waitress wanted to give us an outside table but we loved the decor and so we surprised her by saying we had had enough sun thanks we would prefer to sit indoors! Then we did the typically embarrassing tourist thing do photographing the place. Gail even went so far as to photograph the decor in the loo!!!!! And we even photographed our food. (cringe) I had a divine chicken baguette and salad - easily the nicest I have had in years and a taste I have been yearning for for some time. On leaving the restaurant we were surprised to find many of our students eating at tables in the front part do the restaurant!! It seems they too are savvy about finding great food.
We then browsed some shops and we were sorely tempted in an antique jewelry store. I hope Tennille and I do not regret NOT making purchases: she a ring and me antique suffragette earrings!! We popped into several antique stores figuring this was safe viewing as we could NOT take the furniture home - only drool.
We left Tetley at about 2:30 and went on to Lacock, arriving at about 3:00. The place was packed but we still enjoyed a good stroll around the town. I went into a pottery and saw the most gorgeous ceramic cats and I bought one. When I bought it, I intended it as a gift for Barbara but once I met the potter who was suitably potty I could no longer part with my find!! He claimed to be the illegitimate grandson of Winston Churchill and his wife was the artist behind the cat. Above the cats on the wall were platters with pears etched into them. On hearing I came from
Perth WA he informed me that there is one of his pear platters in the art gallery in Perth. I wonder which one???? It was an intriguing encounter.
We left Lacock at about 4:30 and arrived at the YH in Bath at 5:00. Check in was smooth and Tennille and I are sharing the most beautiful room. It has a wonderedul little iron balcony with huge glass doors which we have opened and we are enjoying the fresh air. I have chosen to sleep in the bed furthest into the room as it might be quieter and give me the chance of a complete night's rest. I am feeling very tired after two nights of waking at about 4:00 am. Gail has chosen to stay in tonight. I think she is finding the pace heavy going and she is not trying to sleep enough. As we are so tired I have decided against cooking tonight and Rob is going or take us into Bath to a pizza hut. The hostel is full and I don't have the energy to fight other guests and to struggle. So pizza it is!!!!
