Here I am still in Perth, the most isolated city in the world. Yet I really do enjoy it here. Once you get used to the Perthisms such as all of the shops shutting at 5pm, even the supermarkets and the fact that when it gets hot, people complain about it, its not a bad place.
As per the last blog, I am still working in the city, saving up enough money to travel that little bit more. However, I have still managed to participate in tourist activities including visiting Kings Park in the evening, where you get some pretty views over Perth, seeing all of the city lights!! The only downside for you fellow Poms ( as we are called here), you do experience some of the wildlife. Spiders seem to have a knack of putting their webs up across pathways so that you walk right into them. The rustling in the bushes also puts you off, because brown snakes lurk all around the park, and surprisingly, being australia, they bite. But it is definately worth the view(photos to follow).
I also visited Freemantle prison where I had a tour around the cells and excercise yards. It was scary to see how little space the prisoners had and even up until 1991, the inmates had no toilets in the cells just buckets. You also saw the gallows where hangings used to take place until the 70's (i think). So overall an interesting day! Following that we headed to Freemantle market where local fruit and produce is available! But obviously they have the usual tourist tack! But its good to have a wonder around!!
As I may of mentioned previously, there appears to be more Irish people in Australia than Aussies, no wonder St Patricks day is such a big affair. I initially headed to a house party and then to Rosy's, an Irish bar in Northbridge! It was absolutely heaving, with lots of people dressed in green, enjoying the day! Following this, we headed to Carnegies, a cocktail bar in the city. A good night all round!
The best thing I have done recently is learning to surf. Paul (an aussie) has kindly taken me surfing, attempting to get me standing along the western Australian coast! Unfortunately, I could not stand the first time and he was pretty much like the surfer above! I was a little concrened however, when the shark alarm sounded. There was me in the middle of the sea off Trigg Beach, on a surf board, just waiting to be eaten by sharks! The alarm ceased, obviously as there were no sharks around, but the fear had already been placed into my head by that point! I carried on, then sat and watched the other surfers!! Will have to attempt it again though! You cannot come to Australia and not give surfing a go!
Other than that, work has been entertaining! I have been on the treatment machine with all the men! Ed, (the one in charge) was wanting me to write about him on the website! He is 6ft 6 and absolutley gorgeous (so he would like to think) and hilarious!! Rich, a canadian/pom just bullies me all time about eating all of the chocolates!! But it makes a change than working with an all female team! But I do think Perth is worth a visit! It may not be as busy as all of the other Australian cities, but I certainly find things to keep me occupied!!
