We arrived in Launceston, an old fashioned place, with the most primative airport I have ever seen and a crap hostel. We weren't too impressed but we were picking up our car in the morning to cruise around tassie!! We got up early and went to pick up the car, as per usual we had problems with price as I was under 25, but after we resolved these we headed toward the east coast! The roads were nothing special until we reached the coast at Saint Mary's where the beaches were pretty with white sand. We stopped off along the way taking photos and for lunch. Later that afternoon we hiked up o the wineglass bay lookout in the Frecinet National Park. The views were stunning and the walk hard, but well worth it! We then carried on down the coast until we reached Port Arthur, passing by great views and tons of roadkill, a sight we had to get used to. Here we stayed in a holiday park, which in fact looked like serial killers may lurke in every corner. With out triple decker bunkbeds and no heating Pam and I settled in for the night, hoping that we would in fact make morning.
Still alive, we headed towards Hobart, along the south coast, driving the long way in order to see more lovely beaches. We passed the tower, just south of Hobart and then headed up to Huonville, where we started to go up through the forest and mountains to reach the tree top walk! There we had views over the rivers and forest, suspended 20m up in the air. The walk was lovely and refreshing with the rope bridges over the river providing us with entertainment. We then headed back to Hobart over the winding roads, and had a quick look around the city, then just chilled out for the evening.
The following day, we headed up Wellington Mountain to look at the views over the city. They were spectacular, as you could see for miles. It was a lot cooler up there though than it was in the city, but we coped. After we headed to the Cascade brewery, had a wonder around and tasted 6 of the beers brewed there. Neither of us were particularly taken with them, but it was still fun. The city was much more modern than launceston and had some historical buildings, which we looked around in the afternoon.
The following day we headed towards the world heritage area and drove through the national parks. We walked up to some waterfalls in the Mount field national park, where we saw padomelon wallabies all around. then continued through the national parks, stopping on the way. Eventually we passed through Queenstown where we were going to stay, but carried on to Cradle Mountain national park. Here we stayed, in the middle of the wilderness. There were possums outside the kitchen ( the first ones I have seen). So Pam and I decided that we would try and get some pictures of them. So we went out through the far kitchen door, but everytime we attempted to take a picture, they would head towards us. We decided to forget it. So as we were leaving the other kitchen door, the possums had sussed us out and tried to break in. Pam screamed, nearly shutting one of their heads in the door and we were scared all night long! they watched us for ages!
The following day we walked around dove lake to get views of cradle mountain. A lovely refreshing walk, where the water was so still and like a mirror. After this we headed back to Launceston, where we spent the next three nights just relaxing. We looked around the town, saw the gorge and watched films. A lovely way to end the trip. We headed back to Perth after our 4 weeks away, and it was nice not to have to repack our rucksacks every day!
