Is Rio where our good luck runs out?
Our day startet out great, we had time to sleep in a bit before going to breakfast. Getting back to our hotel in Buenos Aires, however, we met the most mafioso looking guy in the world. Seriously, I was sure this guy was taken right out of Sicily´s darkest corner. Dark suit, huge dark glasses and dark hair turning grayish neatly combed back, not to forget about his strict look that pierced through even the glasses. This guy, of course, was our driver. Our impression of him being a mafioso didn´t change after talking to him, but luckily, this guy turned out liking us pretty good. On our drive to the airport he told us about how much he liked Ibsen, and tought and played Brazilian jazz for us on the radio. He didn´t seem too happy about us going to Rio, but atleast gave us lots of advice on how to not run into trubble there.
At the airport we were amazed again about how empty the airports in Latin-America are. We hardly see planes or lots of people, exept for the occasional line for passport control.
In fact, there are too few people at the airports. When we arrived in Rio, the guy from our hostel that was suppose to pick us up, was nowhere to be seen. And things didn´t exactly improve when none of the five atm machines accepted our visas! Fortunately, we met a great guy (a guide) waiting for some people that helped us out a lot, and called the hostel for us. They had no idea where their driver was, and couldn´t find our reservation. A long story turned short, we did manage to get to our hostel at the end and they did find our reservation.
It also turnes out, we are again staying in the snobby part of town, and Rio is quite expensive compared to Buenos Aires. We´ve been sceptical of all the violence and crime in Rio before coming, but so far we have only gotten good vibes from our neighbourhood. So here we go again, exploring a new city. Stay tuned!
