Definately recommend Hostel 99!!
Has such a homely feel about it- a communal kitchen, a movie room, and the feel of a private ski lodge. It also has its own pub, with awesomely cheap pub meals and 1 euro Czech Beers! It has an option of games on offer, and an outdoor BBQ area where you can chill out, play ping pong, monopoly, darts etc
Also recommend the river pub crawl!! The hostel owner sets you up to go off on your own- however MAKE SURE you don't go past the 3rd camp site... as we did...
Our story:
8 of us (5 guys and 3 girls), in a 6 man blow up boat plus a bottle of rum.
The hostel owner pulled the boat out of the shed, looked at it, said it needed pumping up, disappeared for about 5 minutes, came back, threw it into the water and said *you.ll be right... we asked where the pump was and he just said he couldnt find it.
It was hilarious. We were all pretty much sitting in water.. it was raining, and freezing cold, yet we were all giggling like crazy.
We had 3 camp sites to stop off at, the first one was hilarious... there was a group of about 20 50 year old czech people, dancing around a camp fire trying to keep warm. We joined in... as you do... We heard a loud crackling noise, and turned around to see About a 15m high tree fall down, out of no where... just above where we pulled in about 10 mins earlier...
So after a beer and a sausage or 2, we were all feeling very merry... the giggles continued and we continued our journey to the next camp site.. which wasnt much in comparison, so we didnt stay there long...
On our way to the third and final campsite, we got stuck at the top of a waterfall...
We were told by the campsite owner, to stop at the second bar after the bridge- not the first one, cause they hate tourists... what he forgot to say was that both bars were in the same campsite,,,
so we rowed right past both of them... 7 KMs in the wrong direction
We were literally in the middle of no where! Completely lost in the wilderness of the Czech Republic...
We rowed past this little village, we thought we should stop and ask for help, but majority of us were still hopeful that the last campsite was just around the corner..,
It wasnt.
So we kept trooping on. It was ridiculously cold... the 5 boys were rowing there little hearts out, and us girls were huddled together. The rum was long gone at this stage...
We finally came across a big slab of land that looked asthough it had been farmed... It was the first sign of life in a long time... So we decided to pull in and look for help...
My legs have seriously never been so cold. It was like they were slabs of cement. I couldnt feel a thing... I knew if I stopped moving I would lose a toe, or something... so I trooped on.
One of the guys and I ran up ahead... One girl nearly passed out due to the cold and had to be carried up the hill by one of the guys. At this stage I seriously didnt think we were going to make it. There was no sign of life..
we finally found a dirt road.. I never thought Id be so excited to see you dirt road.
We started running along it, and it eventually turned into a concrete road. Once again, was so excited.
Still no sign of a person, but We trooped on, and came to a bridge. Across the bridge was a little town... Still no humans! It was like a ghost town- It was about 9pm at this stage (we started the crawl at about 1pm).
I started pushing on gates but they were all locked. Eventually one of them opened, and we walked up the pathway to knock on the door. The door just pushed itself open... still no one around...
Finally this little old Czech lady came to the door... You can only imagine what she must have thought... 8 australians, muddy, drenched, and absolutely freezing cold standing on her door step. She couldnt speak a word of English, but she welcomed us into her home with open arms. She gave us blankets, put on a fire, and gave us all grappa ( A czech spirit) and hot tea. She Laid the worst of us down in the bathroom with her feet in the Bedei with hot running water.
She called her son, cause he could speak some English, and he called the hostel and the guy came to pick us up.
As you can imagine, that night was definately a celebration of life
Cesky Krumlov is a great place to stop and unwind for a few days. Its a small town, but has alot to offer! There's a castle, guarded by bears, and plently of restaurants and pubs to keep yourself occupied. Definately worth the trip!
