DAY ONE:
On the drive from Berlin to Prague, we stopped off at a place called 'Small Fortress Terezin'
In 1790, the fortress was designed to hold 5,655 soldiers in peacetime, and in wartime around 11,000 soldiers.
During WW1 the fortress was used as a political prison camp, having many supporters of Russia placed there under Austro-Hungarian authorities.
In WW2, the fortress concentrated Jews from Czechoslovakia, as well as many from Germany, Austria, the Netherlands, and Denmark. More than 150,000 Jews were sent there, and although it was not an extermination camp about 33,000 died in the ghetto itself, mostly because of the appalling conditions arising out of extreme population density.
88,000 Jewswere deported to extermination camps, meaning at the end of the war a mere 17,247 survived.
Terezin also held POWs from Aus, NZ, Scotland and England- experiencing inhumane treatment such as being fed every second day, and becoming victim to extreme torturous activities. The survivers then suffered chronic phyiscal and mental health problems for the rest of their lives.
It was an amazing experience, and I recommend seeing it to others.
Settled into Hostel (Plus Prague) Thats night- Good hostel, with restaurant and bar
DAY TWO:
Did the Free Walking tour in town- was amazing, however Prague was hit with a heat wave, and walking for 3 and a half hours wasn;t the best idea!!
Saw the Charles Bridge- graced by 30 statues, dating from the 18th centurey, and lined with jewellery stalls, portrait artists and street performers.
The John Lennon 'Peace Wall' and Love Locks,
The clock tower of the Old Hall and 'astronomical clock'(1410)- where on the hour, every hour, has a parade of apostles and a bell ringing skeleton, showing time, month, star signs etc
We then ended the day the the 'Prague Pub Crawl' where you learn the history of beer in the Czech Republic and brewing traditions from Czech master brewers. We also learnt the fundamentals rules for proper and correct beer tasting: Examining the aspect, aroma, taste, body, finish and of course, setting the mind free!
DAY THREE:
Had a trip to the Prague Castle. Theres no charge to wander around the beautiful castle courtyards and gardens, and the Cathedral Nave is stunning.
