The home of the sound of Music!
Hostel- 'International Youth Hostel'- where they play 'The Sound of Music on the big screen all day long
DAY ONE:
Apon arrival into Salzburg, we were famished! So we ran up the road in attempt to find the city centre for a bite to eat. However, we were stopped in our tracks when the heavens opened... We quickly took cover in a street market- and soon discovered it had everything we needed! A butcher, a fruit shop, a bakery, a fish shop, a cheese shop but most importantly the cutest pub I've ever laid eyes upon. It was only big enough to hold about 100 people sitting down, and seeing as 6 seats were already taken up, we had to split up- 4 sitting at the table and the remaining sitting on stools at the bar. We were served Beers fresh from tap, and the little old Austrian lady t ook our orders... There were only enough served of Beef Goulash for four- and I was lucky enough to geet my hands on one,..
It must have been the best meal of the trip! You could actually see the other old lady in the kitchen making everything from scratch. The meat was so tender and flavoursome, and it was served with little potato gnocchi style home made dumplings.
For the evening, we headed to the 'Augustiner Braustubl'- A massive beer hall. Head here early in the afternoon and have a beer with the thousands of locals who attend. You pay a deposit on a ceramic stein (you have a choice of sizes), then fill her up! Wash her out in the water fountain then do it all again! You can find cheap Austrian food within the Braustubl, surrounding the Halls, such as Hamburgers and Sausages.
DAY TWO:
Dedicated to the sound of music!! We woke up and watched the movie on the big screen in the hostel, then we set off on the sound of music tour
This is about 37 euros per person, and is a bit cheesy, but is really a must do for all sound of music fans- I thoroughly enjoyed it!
Your taken on a wonderful ride with breathtaking views of the landscape where the opening scenes were filmed. Highlights included:
Mirabell Gardens (The grand fountain the kids marched around, the Do-Re-Mi steps, the dwarf garden figures that got patted on the head, the hedge covered archway they ran through, and the athletic figures at the garden entrance that they immitated)
Leopoldskron Castle (used for the Terrace scenes at the captains villa, overlooking the lake, where Maria and the children stood up in the boat and fell into the water)
Nonnberg Abbey
St Gilen and Lake Wolfgang
And the Wedding Church
You get enough time to take photos in all the places- so you'll have your own sound of music album in no time!
