En-route to Wanaka we stopped at Lake Matheson for a quick porridge break, which turned out to be a morning basking in the sun absorbing the breath taking views of the southern Alps and constructing amusing blogs for your reading pleasure. Finally we dragged ourselves away and were greeted with yet more spectacular scenery, in fact some of the best either of us have ever seen!
Jackson Bay was our lunch stop for the day and a 100km detour, the lonely planet had assured us we would see penguins. Sadly, the only wildlife we encountered were billions of sand flies and a couple of the local human contact starved cray fishermen. (the town, if you could call it that, had a population of 25!!)
The afternoon brought with it Roaring Billy Falls, where I finally got the chance to have my photo taken by the side of one of the rivers, which I still think should come complete with bears catching salmon. The drive into Wanaka topped even the scenery from the morning which we didn't think possible, we have now found the spot to jump out of a plane. (Sorry Mum, but by the time you read this I should be back safely on the ground and 29 :-( )
After a day of no freebies, matters are made worse when we have to pay to check into a campsite, to avoid being moved on by the police for doing our normal trick of parking at the roadside, apparently they don't take kindly to this in Wanaka, the sheer amount of tourists here ruin it for the rest of us! Given that we had paid $30 we decided to milk it for all it was worth: showers, washing, charging, filling up water bottles, pre-cooking meals to store in tupperware for a rainy day and enjoying a bottle of wine in the warmth of the camp kitchen.
Expecting another cold night we have enhancements in the form of: leggings, duvet, wooly socks and wine. We will let you know how we get on!
