Arrived Christchurch, shattered and with sore throat. Home for the next few days was Addington Jailhouse, a working prison, converted into a hostel in 1999 and maintaining many of its original features. Much like a convict I spent the next few days sleeping and watching DVDs with the occasional exercise break (a wander up the road!).
On the day Fiona arrived I finally made it into town to see what I'd been missing. The tram ride answered this question, and in a word, nothing. Todders and I started off very reserved, with a traditional NZ film, Once Were Warriors - very brutal. Then out came the straighteners, and Matt (TV buddy), Todders and I head into the big smoke in search of trouble. This came in the form of far too many beers/ciders, vodka and Aftershock!!!
2am back at the hostel, we terrorised Kyle, an inmate style mannequin who conveniently lives in the main entrance. We undressed him, broke him in half, wore his clothes, laughed a lot, then I was off to bed leaving Todders and Matt to clear up after me. I'm sure the staff will have a good laugh looking back at the footage captured on the CCTV camera that we noticed the following morning (ok, so it was afternoon by the time we surfaced).
Hangovers rendered us useless the next day, pool, pizza and pub our three accomplishments until later that evening when we set upon Kyle again. This time, carried out with slightly more care, we made him pose doing various tasks around the hostel: washing up, cooking, showering, and finally manning the reception desk where we left him for the staff to find him in the morning. Tomorrow we pick up our campervan and the real adventures begin...!
