Another early start meant that we arrived in Franz Joseph just in time to book a heli hike for that day, closing our eyes and handing over our credit cards we parted with $380. It was worth every penny, helicopter ride was stunning although somewhat stomach churning as we were almost vertical at one point! After a brief bambi on ice moment we strapped on our crampons and over the next 2 hours became ice walking geniuses. Check out the photos for fashion on the glaciers. So the ice was actually blue (it's only the bits exposed to the sun that are white!) and there were loads of crazy cut outs and formations for us to explore. Our guide Jeremy reminded us of the little digger lemmings from the computer game I'm sure you will all remember, our ice picks however were purely for show and turned out to be more of a hinderance!
Whilst catching up on our internet time later, we stumbled across our next freebie. 2 for 1 at the thermal pools, courtesy of Wendy who took a liking to us after our earlier sob story about the rude and nasty women in the other office. Thermal pools were lovely, 36, 38 and 40 degrees but we were more interested in the slightly cooler showers on offer, which gave us the opportunity to also dry and straighten our hair.
Refreshed and clean we headed off for another roadside meal, a new low point: 1/2 tin of soup (home brand vegetable), 2 crusts of nearly stale bread and 1/2 an english muffin. Nice!! Not feeling satisfied we head in search of warmth and sustenance ie: the pub.
That night in the camper after our all singing all dancing toilet experience (I know I will drop the toilet obsession at some point, but these ones actually talked to you and played music!) it all went downhill, quite literally. We had parked on a slope and it was bloody freezing. 2am through chattering teeth we agreed to blast a bit of heat in, think warm thoughts and fall asleep as quick as possible. Tomorrow night we need to find somewhere flat and a solution for our temperature issue as I don't think an hour of sleep a night will quite cut it!!
