Our second day in St Petersburg we embark on a 5 hours tour. We visit the Summer Palace ( Tsarkoye Sole - Puskin). The summer residences of the royal family, a large sprawling palace with many, many elaborate room, guilt everywhere and over the top furnishings, handcrafted parquetry floors, marble Columns and outrageous excess. The highlight, visiting the Amber Room, all amber mosaic, picture frames and wall coverings - amber everywhere you look. The palace was plundered by the Germans during world war two. Today the Summer Palace has been reinstated to it's former glory by the very proud Russian people. Unfortunately it has rained today and we were unable to stroll through the 1400 acres of grounds which are reported to be very beautiful. This is one of the most popular tourist attractions.Unfortunately very poorly organized . We enjoyed our time in Russia , more modern than we expected, attractive well dressed men and women. A lot of expensive cars, obviously a prosperous time in St Petersburg. The dock overlooks a number of very large apartment buildings( high density living) The inner city area has many old apartment building in various states of repair or disrepair! Enjoyed our tours - pleased we made the effort. Stayed up to watch the eleven pm sunset with a bottle of red wine. Good bye Russia.
