Well I haven't blogged in a few days, but we have been pretty busy.
Friday night we had our first night out in Greece. It was quite an interesting night. Let me just say…Greek people do not dance. We got to the club and after everyone got a drink we all started dancing. For young American girls we were dancing very modestly…yet we were being gawked at. Oh, staring is ok here too which is something really hard to get used to. But anyway we all had a few drinks and had a great time dancing…I'm not sure what the other people in the club thought of us though. Oh I forgot to mention that Friday morning we did pottery! The bowl I made is pretty much awesome…although it does have a hole in the bottom so it isn't practical for anything at all. Whoops!
Saturday we did volunteer work. I never imagined that my trip to Greece would include such hard manual labor. I mean I grew up doing yard work for my dad….but this was intense. We were clearing a path on the side of the road so people had a safe place to walk. (Although no place is safe here with the way these people drive!) I ended up with a rake of some sort or another. It was SO hot too…I don't want to complain or anything…but never again. Seriously. I had my back turned to the road while raking and I'm pretty sure a car's mirror almost ripped my butt off on its way by. I might be slightly exaggerating…but then again…These drivers are nuts. But I guess all of our hard work paid off because the people in the town were so thankful for what we did they are giving us a two page spread in their newspaper. So I'm sure a nice picture of me sweaty, dirty and with a grumpy look on my face will be on that page.
Saturday afternoon we met some really nice boys from France…and then a bunch of us from different countries played volleyball. There were some guys from France, Italy, a girl from Poland, etc. It was really fun to listen to all of the different languages being thrown around. Later that night a few of us went and played basketball with the French Boys. It was a great workout—im rusty! Haha but it was fun. Then we all decided to go to one of the local bars to hangout. Well we were of course being loud Americans and we felt that the bar didn't appreciate it so then about 8 of us girls went back to the French boys house to hangout there. We were teaching them American dances and they were teaching us French Dances. I have it on video and will be sure to upload that to facebook! Lol
Yesterday was one of the best days of my life! well, pretty much. We got up early and went to the port where we were catching a boat. For some reason all of us were expecting a yacht sort of boat…um NOPE. Little did we know all 23 of us would be crammed on top of a small boat used to transport petroleum to the island! We all managed to find a spot to sit or awkwardly lay…and off the boat went. We passed a small number of fishing boats were the men literally GAWKED at this boat full of American girls packed like sardines onto the top deck. I'm sure they had never really seen anything like it…and for that matter neither had we. But the scenery was beautiful. We went by gorgeous rocks and islands until we finally came to the one we were spending the day on. A few of us jumped off the boat into what might be the coldest water I have ever felt…and then swam to shore. From then on we all laid on the beach tanning and drinking mixed drinks. The water was so blue and gorgeous…it was so peaceful.
Today we had class and homework to do…so we all laid by the sea and did our readings. I am getting pretty tan, which is always exciting!
