So I haven't blogged in a few days… I've been getting lazy. But now I am laying in bed not quite tired enough to fall asleep so I figured I would update you all on my life.
I'll start with last week. We pretty much just had classes and homework. We go to class in the mornings and then lay out by the water every day while we read and do our homework. It's quite the system we've got going on! Well then Friday we had our excursion. We went to a very deserted area of Greece…I couldn't even begin to tell you where we were. Our Barney Bus (giant purple bus that carts us all around) pulled up to a dirt road and from there we climbed out and begin to walk. We were walking through what looked like an old farm... but there were lots of animals around. Baby pigs, dogs, horses, all kinds lol. Well when we arrived to the area we were intended to be in we saw that we would be learning how to cook! Talk about awesome. We all were sent to do different projects with the food and to begin preparing what was to be our dinner. I of course chose to work with potatoes. Peeling them, slicing them, then seasoning them with huge chunks of garlic and olive oil. Oh by the way….ALL greek food has salt in it. l I swear. Like tons and tons of salt. We were shocked watching how much salt went in to it all…but then again that's probably why it tastes so good! There was also an adorable old man that worked there who showed us around the farm and the old way they used to make flour. Oh yeah, I also got to make fresh bread! Like pound the dough and everything---cross one thing off my bucket list!
After eating our huge delicious meal it was time to learn Greek dancing. If any of you know me at all…you will know I am not the most graceful of Gods creatures. We were supposed to be learning traditional greek dances. One two three, one two three, one two three, TURN. Yeah, it sounds simple. You would think I'd be able to handle that. Nope. My feet were getting tangled and I kept trampling on the poor girl next to me. After miserably failing at dancing, yet laughing my butt off the whole time…it was time for dessert. A delicious strawberry graham cracker invention.
So now comes the best part of the whole day. Our professor Sofia had arranged for us to go to these thermal baths. They are supposed to be healing and soothing and all that good stuff. She hadn't told any of us to bring a bathing suit....but we all did 'just incase.' Well it's a good thing we all brought our suits because these baths weren't very big and it might have been a little uncomfortable if our naked bodies kept brushing by accident. But the baths were very relaxing and we all had fun.
Later that night it was time to go out and hit up the town. We had all been hearing about how the world was supposedly going to "end" this weekend. We were all just hanging out sipping our drinks when all of a sudden half of the town loses power and an extremely loud bang goes off across the street. Naturally, as 19, 20, and 21 year old girls do…we freaked out! We sat there nervously looking around and talking quickly about what the heck was happening while the Greeks just kept drinking and talking as if we weren't all sitting in a pitch-black bar. Well after a few minutes the lights came back on (all of us American girls clapping and cheering loudly once it did—which got us a few disgruntled stares.)
Saturday night we went to a Greek wedding. The brides dress was very elaborate and it was beautiful. It was a "town" wedding so anyone in the whole town could come. I was surprised at how informal it was. Some people showed up in jeans…and then everyone talked through the whole wedding ceremony. It was nothing like a wedding in the states at all. It was really cool to experience it though. After the wedding we got rice thrown in our faces by some little greek boys…who I'm almost certain were yelling obscenities at us without us knowing. They loved the fact that we couldn't understand a damn word they were saying. We were tempted to throw rice back at them and call them a Greek swear word we had learned…but we decided we were way to 'classy' to fight with nine year olds. Sort of.
Sunday was spent laying by the sea reading and doing nothing at all. Later this week we head to Athens and Santorini for our mini-vacation. I'll be sure to blog about it when I get back next week!
Until then,
Brette

Brenda Hey Bretta girl! Once again, thoroughly LOVED reading your blog. Remember to take lots of picture on Santorini. Love you much! Oh by the way, what caused the power outage and what was the big bang you heard?
