BradnDad2014
Setting the alarm for 6.00am, Brad had set his for 5.45, but it didn't go off (surprise), we were off to the ferry by 6.45am. Our intention was to go to SF on the 7.10am ferry from Sausalito, book our place on the standby list for the 5.00pm tour, have some breakfast and then come back. Realising our camera battery was flat as we walked out the door wasn't too important.
Sure enough, when we approached the counter on the dock, we were met with a "No Sir, the standby list has been booked out until next week".... Damn Aussie with his bum steer about tickets..
We hung around the docking area for a little while and witnessed another tourist pick up some extra tickets from a group of school students (no shows).
As we lay in wait, scoping the area for something similar, eventually noticing a group of senior citizens, Zimmer frames n all, we pounced !
It occurred to me how easy it is to stalk someone in public, we could easily have been bag snatchers and they never would have seen us coming. The only thing anyone would remember is Brad's hat and sunnies...
Barbara, the tour leader assured us she would let us know if someone didn't show. Sure enough, they had two tickets left and we were on !
Mingling with our new found septuagenarian friends for a while, we managed to get bonded pre-boarding (saving a queue that stretched for 200m) and comfy seats :)
Alcatraz has a strange foreboding feel about it. Originally a fortress built in the 1860's, but famous as a maximum prison in the 40's (Al Capone did his time there). It is cold, windswept rock in the middle of the bay. The guided commentary tour is well worth while and documents the various breakout attempts over the years. Definitely a must see in San Francisco.
After dark we toddled off to the GGB for some night time shots and a play with the camera.
Damn, it was a cold night !
Having had a huge lunch (fattening Brad up), we dined on Nacho's and jalapeno cheese dip for dinner.
Off to get our other car in the morning and a drive to Pismo Beach, which is about half way to LA.
Farewell to San Francisco.
Initially not over enthralled, the city grows on you and we had a fun time :)
