Up and about around 8.30 this morning and feeling pretty good.
While our cottage is great in many ways, the distance and cost of transport are somewhat limiting. I'm still assessing expenses, but this trip is shaping up to be a lot more expensive than Europe. The taxi to the ferry was $25.00, 2 x ferry ticket $32.00. return, taxi home $18.00... and that's just to get to the city and back...
Deciding we needed to get our own wheels, we contacted a local wheeler and dealer named "Art" through Google. Art is quite the salesman and could have a car for us within 30 minutes for only $32.00 / day... Let's do it ! was our enthusiastic reply..
Thirty minutes later, we found ourselves walking around a location near our local shopping centre. "Look for the carpark on the corner of Blah and Blah, in the back corner you'll find a gold 1996 Toyota Avalon, keys are under the seat. Have fun, Oh and by the way, do you want collision insurance ?"...
We now have possession of "Ethel"... Ethel has 260k on the clock and a few battle scars, but she makes us smile as we lope along the highway.
We took off to the Golden Gate Bridge for a stroll. Finding very scenic views from the Northern embankment and eventually walking the bridge, we finished the day with a burger from "In and Out" burger joint. A chain of burger places that suggest they are what McDonalds used to be.
On that note, we have only seen one McDonalds store in SF. I'm sure there are more, but we haven't noticed them on every corner as suggested.
Another thing I've noticed are huge car parking bays. Unlike the tight little parking spots at home, you can swing into these in one shot and fling the door open, knowing that you're not going to hit the car next to you. Even though Ethel has a few miles on her, there are no car door dings...
Sunday, we are driving across the bridge and into SF proper to see some more of the city.

Jeff, Anita & Ben, Monkey Logic Wow, how awesome! Looks incredible. If you are Star Wars fans, cross the bridge and head up to the Redwood National Park where they filmed the forest scenes with the Ewoks...really spectacular, plus you pass the giant cranes that were the inspiration for the At-At's on Hoth. (yes, we are Star War tragics...thanks for asking...!). SF is so cool, have fun!
Joanne Be sure to ride the trams down those hills boys - they're great fun!! Fisherman's wharf should offer some great fish and chips with a good serving of wind on the side. That's atmospheric wind, not bottom pants wind :). Have fun, love the blog.
