Got up with the sun, which i continued to do every day on the tour! its pretty amazing waking up to sky not ceiling! we packed up the stuff and had some brekky then drove over to Wilpena Pound.
We walked to a couple of lookouts, its incredible! the aboriginal story goes that the people were having a big ceremony when two giant serpents came and ate all the people, but were then too full to move so they settled head to tail and formed the walls of the pound! We got some lunch and ice lollies then headed off.
We arrived at Iga Warta, a local aboriginal community, around mid afternoon. one of the locals, Sharpy, took us to the ocre pits and painted all our faces traditionally! the men would have stripes and the women spots. the locals here are so laid back theyre horizontal, and move and talk so slowly its unreal!
had a bit of a funny moment on the way back. nienke and fran had a bit of a b****y comment fest over nienke's gucci bag, and it went really quiet. me and chad at exactly the same time just looked at each over and made a knife cutting motion with our arms...it was completely synchronised! we fell about laughing and noone knew what was so funny, which made us laugh even more!
we had a dip in their swimming pool, played volleyball and had a general splash around then prepared dinner. we then sat around the campfire and listened to Sharpy, Terrence and Cliff (locals) tell stories and sing songs. we learnt bits of their language through song, 'warrachee' is magpie, 'wildoo' is eagle, 'wakalay' is crow and 'oodeloo' is kangaroo, though im not sure of the spellings! we also learnt that Iga Warta, the name of their tribe, means Rock People, as they live in the Flinders Ranges. We sang a song which went....."all you need is love, all you need is love, all you need is love, to live in peace and harmony" we all cringed a bit but was very funny! we also sang a song about being hungry, which went "OH! my walla, its rumbling its tumbling. OH! my walla, its rumbling like a big base drum" walla means tummy! there were even dance moves to that one!!! the other song we had to dance round the fire pretending to be animals, with verses like "hop like a kangaroo" "wiggle like a witchety grub" "fly like a big eagle" and "walk like an emu" lots of fun. We also baked and ate a damper, which is a loaf of bread cooked by burying it in the ground under the fire. When it was cooked, he asked me to beat it with a branch to get the dirt off, and told me to pretend it was my boyfriend and he'd been mean! so watch out sean!! we ate that with locally produced jam which was really nice!
me, chad and fran decided it would be fun to have a midnight dip in the pool, which took all of my willpower as its away from the campsite and the light, and is completely dark and scary! we all got in and started throwing the ball around, then started to scare ourselves a bit by joking that there were dead people in the deep end! we decided it was time to get out when chad jinxed us by saying "at least theres nothing in here that can kill us". iv never moved so fast! on the way back to the camp some of the group scared the crap out of us by jumping out the bushes shouting and screaming!!!
