We got a flight from Da Nang to Ho Chi Minh today, we had to leave our homestay @ 5am but the family were all up ready to see us off and offer us coffee and cakes! (we both hate coffee so this is always awkward) We got to the airport just before 6am and check in was all good and easy.
Our flight was at 8am so we had abit of time to kill, but we always like to be early because this is Asia, and they like to just change things last minute so you never know!
We got to our Hostel in Ho Chi Minh about 11am and managed to check in pretty much straight away which was great! It was a cool place but we had bunkbeds haha! They were double bed bunkbeds so of course i insisted on sleeping at the top!!
We headed pretty much straight out to take a look around Ho Chi Minh, We decided to hire a bike from next door, i was pretty scared as the journey from the airport was pretty busy, there were a lot more bikes and cars here than anywhere in Vietnam! But James did good getting us around!
We headed straight to the War Museum, I dont normally have big expectations for things like this but wanted to give it a go.
I'm glad we did, it was amazing. We both learnt so much about the Vietnam war and it was very sad to read actually! We saw the and read about the torture the vietnamese were put through, things like tiger cages. Barbwire cages so small you couldn't even sit up in them and they would fill them with people. Almost all the prisoners came out with lifetime disabilities due to the torture, unbelievable. And we learnt about the American Agent Orange which is still effecting people to this day, crazy.
After a rest at the hostel we headed out to Hard Rock Cafe, YAY! The drive there was VERY interesting however, very busy & very scary!! Once we managed to park in a locals car park i some how burnt my leg on our very hot exhaust and then immediately stood in some mud with my flip flop on, worst minute ever! After getting quite irate about this situation James calmed me down, and of course hardrock helped! We both tucked into burgers and beers and the brought our hard rock ho chi minh pin to add to our collection!
We had a little look around then took the bike back to our hostel to grab a drink near us. We wondered into a bar on the corner with good people watching opportunities and took a seat, We ordered 2 beers and the bill came to 100,000 VND, Bearing in mind literally next door 2 beers should only cost 20,000 VND. What a rip off, we will not be returning! We did however get to see a small boy breathing fire in the middle of the road…
