My My My don't these weekly blogs come around fast!
Well it was a sad week in England with the news that I would have to hang up my ice skating boots forever, this news has hurt me deeply as you all know how committed I am to becoming more athletic. It seems that I had done some tendon damage when I fell last week so under the doctors strict instructions I must now limit myself to eating choc tops at the cinema next door!
Josh has settled down heaps, he has joined a band and gets together regularly for 'jam sessions' which he loves! One of the subjects that he has taken at school is law and he really enjoys it, he has even spoken about 'looking into it' when he leaves school, the fact that he seems to have a bit of direction is fantastic! Of course I don't want to jinx things just yet but last week he actually spoke to us instead of the usual teenage 'grunt'….and then therewas thesubject of finding a part time job that HE suggested?
Well while you guys were busy celebrating Australia day we celebrated a Scottish tradition called 'Burns day'. Apparently 'Burns' was a Scottish poet that was born and died on the same day (also the poet responsible for writing 'Auld Lang syn').
We celebrated by having a traditional Scottish dinner with a lady that Brian works with. Now while I do like to think of myself as slightly adventurous I had to draw the line at trying 'haggis', blahhh, of course I don't think matters were made any better when they had just finished discussing what haggis was made of! For those of you that don't know...google it!
Brian never one to miss an opportunity to try new foods loved it, hmmmm pass.
Finally Saturday was the chocolate factory, yay! Things in England work differently and for most outings like this you will need to 'pre book' and pay with your credit/debit card before hand (I had pre booked the week after we got here) as I also had to do with the Ice skating, I'm not sure what happens if you decide to go out on the spare of the moment here as most places are booked out.
We had a lovely day at the chocolate factory and learnt lots about the history of chocolate, the samples were plentiful but yet there were no oompa loompa's?
A tip for anyone planning on visiting the chocolate factory, buy after the tour and sampling and not beforehand …what's the old saying about your eyes being bigger than your belly!
On the way home we had a bit of a look around Birmingham and found some markets to hunt through at a place called Walsall which was very old and very lovely.
Having had time to walk off a bit of chocolate we decided to take the kids to Pizza Hut for dinner as a treat. Sounds harmless enough right? Wrong…
Taylah spilt the lollies at the dessert bar everywhere; Emilee drained the ice cream machine and we definitely knew it was time to leave when Emilee proceeded to shoot baby marshmallows out her nostrils!
Brian and I weren't sure what was more embarrassing, the Pizza Hut incident or Emilee challenging a boy at school to an eating competition...apparently he gave up in defeat after she had managed to down 7 apples! Of course I had to find this out by the boy's mother! On the upside…Go The Aussie's !
Sunday we had a knock at the door and were greeted by a strange lady bearing a bunch of tulips and wait for it…..two packets of Tim Tams! God bless her, turned out she was a fellow Aussie that has been living here for the last 9 years and thought we might like a little piece of home. Anyway it was lovely to have some one that we could relate to and she helped us with heaps of questions. As much as she claimed to be Australian she definitely didn't sound it. I had a great chuckle because the whole time she was here Brian kept calling her Elizabeth, he even waved her off saying 'bye Elizabeth', lol, It wasn't until she was around the corner that I could stop laughing long enough to tell him her name was actually Kristine, hee hee.
Well that's about all from this neck of the woods, I hope you all had a lovely Australia day and ate a snag or two off the barbie for us!
Three things I miss most about home, a beef sausage, the smell of the sun in my washing and family/friends..
Until next week….Cheers from the chilly UK
