Our last day at Ankor involved a lot of cycling! We headed out a bit later at 6am (the alarm went off at 5, but I swiftly turned it off in my sleep!) to the outlying temples on the 'grand circuit'! The first stop was a really overgrown temple which was really cool, and the others were quite a bit smaller but still great to see. We ended up enjoying the cycle between them more, through forests and really pretty in the sunshine. Unfortunately I picked a bike with a broken seat, which fell off halfway around (luckily I got away with cuts and bruises, and a kind tuktuk driver helped ollie fix it so we could carry on!) We were thoroughly templed-out by 1pm so headed back to town.
Our bus was at 1:30am, so we had a long long wait with no room to nap in! So we had to fill our time which involved slow meals, beer, free popcorn and a lot of internet time! By the time we got on the bus (2:30am, everything is always an hour late here!) we fell asleep straight away! We reached the border at 8am, a while later than scheduled because a girl on our bus was really ill (food posioning I think) so we had to stop for long periods of time at service stations! After piling into a minibus (they managed to fit a whole busload in there, but being squashed between bags provides quite comfortable sleep actually!) we arrived in Bangkok around midday.
Yesterday we headed to a super fast long-tail boat across the canal to the CBD for a look around the huge shopping malls. The main one is still closed from the riots a couple of months ago, and you can still see the burnt out buildings. After travelling up and down far too many escalators we decided to head to the cinema to entertain ourselves for the afternoon! We saw Inception at the top of the poshest shopping mall (the cinema was equally posh).
That evening we carried on the 'posh' theme and headed to the Sky Bar, on top of the state building hotel in the CBD. We tried hard to dress for the past, but don't really have the right clothes (or shoes) for the occasion so really thought we wouldn't get past the door! We drew up in our super speedy tuktuk (that's what you call style) and lukily passed the inspection of the doorman. 64 floors up, the view was amazing. I felt a bit like royalty being shown down the stairs with a torch light, and sipping a cocktail looking out over the city lights, but at 10 pounds a drink one cocktail was all it was! We managed to make it last nearly two hours though (that is SLOW drinking!) then headed back to backpacker territorry for a cheap beer :)
Today we're preparing to leave Bangkok for India tomorrow! We're eagerly awaiting the arrival of Emily and Josh for a Nancolas (+ Ollie) reunion here in Bangkok, then fly tomorrow evening. I think we plan to have a Thai massage this afternoon too so the luxury continues...
