We caught the bus to Siem Reap at lunchtime and got there much earlier than expected :) Our hostel here is really cheap, though we passed on the $1 dorm rooms as they were mattresses in the hallway! We figured a room was worth the extra dollar! We walked around town a bit before dinner, but there's not much in SIem Reap itself, as its used as the gateway for Ankor Wat :D
We'd decided on the three day temple pass, even at $40 each, as its a vast area to cover in just one day and we really wanted to cycle between place rather than drive. We reached Ankor Wat itself in the morning - amazing! We went back to town around lunch time to give blood at the local childrens hospital! I'd like to say we thought of this ourselves, but it did mention it in the guidebook (which made me feel more safe about the whole thing!) We even got coke, biscuits and a t-shirt for our troubles (definitely worth a pint of blood!) We headed back to the temples after that, but only saw two more as we got caught in the rains! The bigger of the two was very different to Ankor Wat, much much older. We ended up stood for over half an hour in a small room in a temple to shelter, then cycled back through sunset. We'd not eaten well that day, with lunch consisting of a jam sandwich for ollie and an egg baguette, with added meat, for me (even Ollie wouldn't eat that one!), and after miles of cycling and giving blood we were feeling somewhat worse for wear! So dinner was strictly 'safe', meaning western for me... We ordered pesto pasta, and were given spaghetti with green leaves (basil? no, mint!) So we forced down a meal which tasted strangley like a mojito!
Today was sunrise day, so we were up at 4am! By 4:15 we had hired our bikes and were on the way to Ankor Wat, probably the best place to see the sunrise, if VERY touristy. We arrived bang on 5, along with 4 buses full of people! We managed to blag a decent place to watch and take photos though, and it was rather pretty. We spent the rest of this morning at the other big temple, Ankor Thom, and a couple of smaller ones along the way. By 11 we were completeley shattered so headed back to our hostel where we're spending a quiet afternoon. The plan was to cycle back for sunset at another temple, but Im not sure our legs will take it so we're thinking of heading to the night market for souvenier shopping instead!
