Ok so now for the fun stuff and what i've been up to lately.
I've started schoo, its ok, its definately more hands on and preparing us for getting a job straight out of school, which is what i wanted. I can actually understand all my teachers (obviously they're not from the north).
Quick note on accents: Yes i still love Scottish accents, people who aren't from the north sound sooo very different from people elsewhere. The thick northern accents sound a lot like the reneck accents you get in US...
So back to school stuff. The campus here is nothing like in the US. The departmental buildings are all spread out throughout the city, except for the new science site where mine is (unfortunately my bus drops off at the north of city center, so its a half hour walk to my building). I am in a class with 19 other students only one of which is a guy, Ian. he speaks very posh-like and gets on alot of people nerves icld. the teacher's. There's a girl from Wales, another from Ireland, and also Scotland. There's two girls from Canada and two asian girls. So our class is rather diverse.
As part of my course I also have to volunteer at a museum for 1 day a week all term. So i and about 7 or 8 others volunteer at Beamish (it takes 3 different buses to get there but it is nice) http://www.beamish.org.uk/Home.aspx Its been super cold the last 2 times i was there and lots of people were still visiting, crazies! The museum has just gone down to winter hours so only the town is open and the lady I worked with this past monday will soon be re-decorating the town for christmas, so I'll be heping with that.
Ok so onto dancing. Well i went and checked out the swing club in Durham but they've only been around for a year and so there's not hardly any experienced dancers. I checked out the ballroom club and their social lessons are really good and cheaper than they were in the US. However I can't go anymore cause the bus stops for almost 2 hrs so I'd get finished with the lesson and have to wait for 2 hrs and not get home till midnight in the middle of the week. Bummer, so I'm looking out for a partner so I can compete instead (the lessons are at better times too). I figure if i compete a bit then after I get out of school I teach dancing wherever I end up living for some money on the side, and its a night time activity anyway so it wouldn't get in the way of a regular job. I checked out the local irish set dance group... yeah not the same as irish step dancing....at all. Everyone was at least twice my age and the dances look different, it was still fun though and everyone was nice. I may go back anyway. I went to the local salsa class. It was good (i came after the class was over to socially dance). I met a nice guy named Stuart, and he and I ended up going to Salsa at a place called the Black Swan that Friday in Newcastle. We also went to a tango class that he goes to every week beforehand and it was pretty good. the venue is an artsy little place right on the river. The lead teacher and I danced to a milonga and candombe song which is one of my favorites. It was really nice to get to dance to a candombe song w/a good dancer, cause I haven't in so long.
So keep on reading my next blog cause I'm gonna talk about my nutty roommates!
