Hello from Cairns!
After our mad skydive, we drove up to Cairns, which has a reputation for being a bit of a party town, to chill out whilst catching some rays in the day (The temp was up towards 40 degrees) followed by some good drinking sessions during the night.
We arrived in Cairns and found a place to stay at Koalas who have a chain of hostels around Oz and who we've stayed with before with no problems. We dumped our bags and went out to have a look round. It turns out that Cairns is only a small place but literally every five shops down, there is a pub or a club so it was living up to its name as the 'party town'. The beach in Cairns is not very good but there is a massive outdoor swimming area surrounded by grass (we later found out it was called 'the Lagoon') which looked good and was packed with people day after day.
After settling down, we decided to invest in a cricket set and do a bit of exercise seeing as we haven't done any physical exercise apart from raising our arms to pour beer down our throats since we've been here. We had a good few games but after the first game we had, we all woke up the next day with aches and pains everywhere with me wondering whether I was 24 or 84, I thought the old arthritis was setting in . It got a bit easier over the next few days but we were all nearly dying after we ran for the ball, that goon is bad stuff I tell ya!Â
So most of the days we either played cricket or headed down to the Lagoon and apart from that, there wasn't that much to do. Whilst sat in our apartment, we saw a familiar face walk past. It was big Rob the Dutch guy who we had met in the notorious room 5 at Surfer's Paradise. We had a good catch up and arranged to meet him later that night in a place that has 'all you can drink' for 10 dollars which is 4 English pounds. Not bad eh?! As you can imagine, we were all a bit worse for wear  and all ended up losing each other and heading home our seperate ways. The town centre in a 5 minute walk, straight along the road outside our apartment but it took me a good hour and a half to find my way back after a few directions from the local police man who I think was laughing at me because I was stood across the road from it . Overall it was a quality night!
The next day, we took a walk into town and bumped into another familiar face. It was Brent, the Canadian guy who was also a member of the notorious 'room 5 crew' at Surfer's. It turned out to be his last night in Oz as he was going back to Canada the next day. We never saw him again as we couldn't get in the place we arranged to meet him in due to us apparently being too drunk. Don't these aussies know that us English guys can drink loads with little or no effect?? Actually we were all pretty legless after playing some drinking games with the cards so credit to the guy for sending us idiots home because we were in no state to party .
We decided to have a steady night the next night and sat in the pub watching the football. It was Tottenham vs Arsenal followed by the mighty Blades vs Charlton with the Blades doing well and getting a point. We decided to celebrate on our way home by getting a hotdog outside the pub. It was now just before midnight and it would have been the earliest time we've been to sleep since we've been out here but once again we didn't make it home until half 2 due to us meeting two local aussie girls called Kylie (no not Minogue) and Natalie who were lovely girls. One is an occupational health therapist (your guess is as good as mine when it comes to knowing what that is) and the other is a teacher. James and Miller headed home leaving me and Dave talking the girls to death until the early hours, trying to explain to them that it never rains in England which they were having none of, oh well. After a good chat we headed back, once again in the early hours to our Koala beds. We met up with the aussie girls and a few of Daves friends from back home a few nights later and had a good night before it was time for us to pack our things and start making the long journey south to Sydney.
Overall, Cairns was a good place to visit, it was like a big reunion seeing the boys from Surfer's and we had a good laugh with the aussie girls but we have about 30 hours of driving to do between us over the next few days before we arrive in Sydney which i'm not looking forward to!!!
So from the 'Party capital', its bye bye
