At long last I have decided to get off my lazy ass and update my journal. The main reason I haven't was due to my job and the stupid hours I had to work but now that i've finished I have no excuse so here goes....
After the horrible 2 day drive down from Cairns, we arrived in Sydney around 9 at night and were immediately impressed although it seemed as if we were in China not Australia with the amount of Asians around. James and Dave tried to give us a tour around the city but those boys don't know their head from their arse and got lost although they would say different . The boys had a spare set of keys to an flat which they stayed in the last time they were in Sydney and took us there to get a few nights free accomodation until we got busted and sure enough we did after the third night. We managed to blag the landlord though by telling him that we only arrived the night before, which he believed. (How gullible are these Aussies!!!)
The boys warned us that the flat wasn't in the best condition and they were right. There were MILLIONS of cockroaches everywhere, in the kitchen, in the fridge, in the microwave, everywhere and although they were only small ones, it was still disgusting but we learned to live with and destroy them . Also in the flat was a French lad called Damian and a Canadian called Tom. We got to know these guys and had a fair few nights going out and getting bladdered with them.
We had a couple of weeks sight-seeing and lazing about before we had to start looking for work. We went down to Darling Harbour which is a beautiful harbour in the city centre, then to the Opera house and from there we saw the Harbour Bridge. Miller skipped the sight-seeing and decided to look for a job right away and found one, after a couple of days, in a cafe. When we finally got bored of doing nothing everyday, Dave rang his old boss and sorted us 3 with jobs working for OnSite Labour Hire. This to me sounded good as we would be doing manual work and hopefully burning off a few excess pounds that we had picked up due to the excessive drinking and takeaway eating that we had been doing. We arrived at the Sydney exhibition centre and were told straight away to start picking carpet up. HOW EXCITING!!! We had to pick up 1 metre square carpet tiles and put them on a stack and if the stack wasn't straight, we got a b******ing. What a job! The next day involved putting carpet tiles DOWN. Exciting work eh and at 6 in the morning, I was loving it . For the first few days all we did was carpet but then we moved onto building and taking down exhibitions which was ok apart from the fact that you don't get any training, you just pair up with someone and hope for the best. James and Dave paired so I had to find a partner and teamed up with a Turkish guy called 'Matthew' (funny name for Turk). We didn't have a clue what to do but just copied others and most of the time it worked out but sometimes we got a mouthful from the boss.
It wasn't long after this that James and Dave left for home. We all dressed up as cowboys on their final night and went to a club looking like idiots but we weren't bothered coz we were legless . We had a good 3 months with the boys but it was time to say goodbye as we went to the airport with them. There was tears on both sides, sadness from James and Dave, happiness from me and Mill. We waved them off and went back to the flat and things seemed wierd without them but after a few minutes we were back to our old selves again.
At this point I was deciding whether to look for a new job or not. I'm not a morning person and working everyday at 5, 6 or 7 in the morning laying carpet didn't appeal to me, especially when we were working 12, 13 and even 14 hour days sometimes but I decided to stick it out and just thought about the money. Looking back it was a good decision because although I got a fair amount of b******ings in the time I was there (due to me being like a zombie due to a lack of sleep everyday) I made some good friends and started to enjoy the job. I got to see some nice places whilst working such as Darling Harbour, the Olympic Stadium and Rosehill Racecourse.
I became good friends with 'Matthew' the Turk and he is the only person I know who is more lazy than me! Yep, hard to believe but true. We started going to the gym together and after one exercise, he wanted to go home saying he was too tired. Bloody wierdo, lol. Another good lad was a guy called Scotty. He was a good sport as I tried to wind him up everyday by telling him that Aussies were crap at sport and that the English were better at most things to which he p***ed himself and called me a pommy **** . Overall the job was a good laugh and the lads I worked with were sound. I'm meeting up with some of them when we get back to Sydney around xmas which will be good and for the time being i'll just send them emails reminding them that we still own them and to look at their $5 note which has a pic of our Queen on it. Never fails to get them going
Me and Mill are now getting ready to leave Sydney for Melbourne, home of 'Neighbours' whch he wants to take me to, can't wait .
I'll update more often now that were on our 'jollies' again.
From Sydney its goodbye......
