Well we have walked our little feet off today!
Started out at the bakery again for breakfast and then (what i hoped would be) a visit to the back to get some travelers cheques changed to dollars (easier for Mongolia) 40 mins later i was done... it took forever! They werent used to it, but they only took a couple of dollars commission. Then it was onto the underground and to Tian'amen Square. By the time we got the Mao's Memorial Hall (yep going to see another dead embalmed dude!) it was closed, so will have to go another day.Walked through Tian'amen square and toward the Forbidden City. Cost us 40Y to get into the sprawling massive inner city of the emperor, but we were in there most of the day! @Walked and walked and saw all the buildings, very good actually, on a par with Pompeii for beingable to imagine what it would have been like with all the concubine andeunuchs about the place and all the pomp and ceremony! They have their own garden and a building for every occasion. It was shorter than we imagined and reached the end reletively quickly, but it was very wide and half of it wasnt even open to the public, hundred and hundreds of buildings. Claire read some where that there were 9999 rooms! All very impressive and thought evoking.
When we were finished we were very hungry so thought we would try and find a restaurant not too far away that we had read about that did very good Peking Duck. On the way we came across a street that seems to have be built on the same site as an ancient street had been. It was all very new and half of the shops were empty, was all very weird, but it could be interesting.
Got the the end and onto the street where the restaurant was. We dont think we chose the one from the book, but the one we did choose we enjoyed! It was the most expensive meal we have had since being here, but very very nice. We had a whole duck between us for just 68Y, with drinks, about 8 pounds each! The duck was sliced instead of shreaded and the Hoi Sin was a bit more bitter than at home, but there were loads of pancakes and we throughly enjoyed it all - every last scrap!
When we got back out onto the street it was freezing - literally, but we didnt have very far to walk to the underground. On the way there were some mysterious lights in the sky, we just couldnt work out what they were, on top of buildings? a bridge? But we got closer and they were just suspended in mid air... very spooky and the only conclusion was could make was that they were very still kites, from the park opposite? Weird. We didnt have to swap lines to get to the stop closest to the hostel, short walk back and called for some chocolate cake/dessert from the bakery. Going back to the room to enjoy that now and thaw out!! Again...
