Brief overview of Shanghai...
We were in Shanghai for 3 days and 2 nights. It rained the whole of the first day but thankfully the hotel was warm and ok, dispite lack of internet! We did venture out in the rain, but it wasnt plesant and we had a bad experience with a rat in a cafe we went in! But the fireworks that people were setting off in the street were fun to watch, some even exploding right outside our window! They did go on a bit late though, wich wasnt so good!
On the second day we found the old town and walked through the streets and markets and went to a really lovely tranquil gardens. Went for a nicer meal that night, to a japanese restaurant and had fried udon with beef, very yummy.
Shanghai struck us as very Eastern European, a very different look to the rest of China we have seen, very stark and angular. The big skyscraper buildings on the other side of the river are spectacular though, its probably very different over there.
We had to leave on an earlier train due to rushes at spring holiday, but the train was very very nice, the chinese sleeper trains have been really lovely.
