What we saw today is one memory, I believe, that will be etched in our minds for a long time to come. The magnificent views of the Oceans from the Cape Point and Cape of Good Hope, and the legendary Misty Cliifs, a fitting stunning finale for the day.
As usual, we headed to Green's for our breakfast after waking up before embarking our unforgettable journey. The french toasts at Greens were fantastic by the way.
First stop was Kalk Bay. A peaceful, serene looking town with some shops and restaurants. A lot of bikers (bicycles-kind, not Motorbike-kind) rode thru this place though. We got down and checked out the place for a little while. Tong got himself another Rose Quartz here. Realising there's nothing much going on, we continued our journey south.
Next up was Boulder's Beach, where the African Penguin resides. Paid the park entrance fee and went in search of the Penguins. The Boulder's Beach was literally littered with boulders all over in a very scenic formation. It wasn't really a particularly hot day despite the sun but it was made colder when Tong mentioned to me that the boulders are like grown up pebbles.....hmm...
Well, to go on, we manoveured our way around the boulders and managed to find a few penguins waddling here and there. They were really cute, I don't know if they can be considered wild penguins but there certainly isn't any cages or barriers around to prevent you from getting too near to them here. We climbed up some boulders and found their nesting area. There was a sign saying no entry from that point onwards but we hecked and went ahead anyway. Found some penguins hiding amongst the rocks and saw a colony of them further down the other side of the boulders! Just as we were about to head off, we got discovered by the staff and were escorted away from the nesting area!
We then headed off out onto a path, the correct path, leading to the other side of the boulders to check out the penguin colony. This time we could only watch them from a bridge, gotta protect their sorta homey area I guess. Tong briefly saw 2 penguins making out, seems that way at first but I believed they were probably doing else lah! Interesting place!
There was a souvenir shop which we went into. Glanced a round and then headed back to our car. Checked underneath for any stray penguins...CLEAR! And off we went to the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve.
There was a long car queue at the entrance and took a while to get in. We soon found out there were a lot of visitors today, probably because there wasn't any match going on today. It was a long drive to the Cape Point from the entrance surprisingly. There wasn't any nice views along the way which made it a little boring at first. We hit a roundabout after some driving and were told that the carpark at the Cape Point was full and we should park below and take a shuttle bus up. And that's exactly what we did! It was quick and we were at Cape Point in no time. It was past noon and we decided to have lunch first before venturing out to the view points. We ordered 2 pizzas and they were pretty filling!
We got return tickets for the Funicular up the slope and into the main scenic area. Sights of the Oceans was mesmerising. The winds were blowing and the waves crashing against the cliffs in a rhythmic fashion. The sounds from the winds and waves were music to my ears as do all things natural. There were steps and pathways leading to several view points to admire the great oceans. There were quite a lot of tourists around so it was a little crowded. We went up a flight of steps to a lighthouse area. At this point, Miss GF called and naturally Tong had to give attention. I wandered about and came across this direction signs pointing towards major cities and their distance away, and guess what...Singapore is up there! There isn't Malaysia or KL but I saw "Malaysia Boleh!" in black marker ink on the pole...jaws dropped and eyes rolled all the way back and almost couldn't make it back!
It was there I discovered that there was a short hike to the REAL edge of the Cape Point and on seeing Tong's mobile glued to his ears still, I decided to make the trip. It was an easy down slope walk which, from my humble trekking experience, spells toughness for the return leg =p. Anyway, I reached the end of the trek and there was another lighthouse at the bottom of the cliff. And this time, you really feel as if you're next to the ocean and did I mention I was looking directly at where the Indian Ocean meets the Atlantic Ocean? How damn cool is that!! Tong is really missing out on stuffs man..LOL.
I went back up in double quick time as I think I spent a tad too long down there. Tong was done and we decided not to take the funicular back down. We walked down and enjoy the sceneries along the way. Just nice the shuttle bus was waiting at the bottom already and we took it back to our car. Cape of Good Hope next!
It was too far way and it was crowded! Luckily our Chevy Spark was small and agile, we managed to squeeze here and there and found a space to stop our car. We got down and walked directly towards the seaside. It was really windy and now we are really by the ocean, the Atlantic to be precise. It was really scenic and a great place for photos! We grab a few shots with the ocean and stayed for a while to take in the magnificent sights.
That was it for the Cape of Good Hope, we hopped into our car and it was time to go back. Little did we expect one of the best view mother nature can conjure up was awaiting ahead. We took another route back to Cape Town and its mostly along the coastline and I believed its called the Chapman's Peak Drive. Our drive back was set in a tremendously beautiful and romantic backdrop as it coincided with the sunset. Tong was hardly the 1st person on my list be with at this point of time! LOL!! But I'm sure our feelings are mutual. Right Tong? haha
The views were superb but after a series of turns and bends midway thru the trip, the legendary Misty Cliffs greeted us! Upon setting our eyes on it, we both uttered "we must stop lah" or something like that, in unison! The waves smashing against the cliffs resulted in mists hovering over the beach beside it and made it look really heavenly. Its like you're on land but you feel like you're floating above the clouds like angels. Really really amazing. If you ever go Cape Town, please please please get a car and go there!!
Van't really bear to go off but night was falling upon us and we had to go. Ended up at Hout Bay where we had fish and chips for dinner at Mariner's Wharf. Very fresh! Quite obvious it didn't stay dead for too long after being caught. One funny incident happened here, 2 ang mohs in front of us in the queue tried to order lobsters. And to make sure that they are really getting lobsters, they ask the cashier if the lobster was, ok..you have picture this in your head, "Ching! Ching!" while his 2 hands were up like a scissors cutting. That moment was really hilarious, Tong and me looked at each other and tried not to laugh out!
This was the place where I met the Soap Girls! They're 2 french ladies whom moved to SA 11 years ago and just finished studying high school if I didn't hear wrongly, and selling handmade soap(by their mum) of vaious designs, for charity I was told. For a French, I mentioned that they spoke really good English and they returned the compliment. They were really chatty and thats how I found out so much. What was really interesting about them was that they almost always speak in unison and its very cute! They love languages and can speak a bit of everything. They were impressed that I knew Japanese after I taught them some Japanese words.LOLz! I bought a soap with SA flag design in the end. Not ex at all.
After dinner, it was dark. We headed directly back to Cape Town and to Long st first as Tong wanted to use the internet. No luck tonight as all the terminals are taken. He ended up talking on the phone again. haha. Meanwhile I kept myself occupied by looking at a Argentinian TV crew interviewing and filming people around the area.
