After over 15 hours of flight, Tong and me finally landed in Cape Town! What greeted us after we cleared the customs was really cool! There were people beating drums and all! You can sense the world cup atmosphere already.
We then went straight to Hertz to collect car. We were given a Chevrolet Spark. Cute car but can't really sprint as we found out soon. Together with a GPS, we set of to find our accomodation at 27 Belleueve St. GPS led us to a dunno what ulu place man. Super suburb and damn run down, totally unlike the photos! We were damn scared lor..haha. All the fear of being robbed and killed and all started creeping in. We decided that we went to holland and then tried to re-set the location to streets nearby our accom. Took us a while but we finally made our way to Cape Town proper.
Found a note on the door to call a number if no one answers. Called and Makawa greeted us. Nicely friendly chap whom explained how things work in Cape Town and around the area. Our room was pretty nicely furnished but not very big though. There's a kitchen to use and free flow of tea and coffee! We settled down rested as the long flight and drive took a toll on us. Tong wasn't looking very good at this point.
A couple of hours later, we went to a nearby Kloof Road and into Greens restaurant to have our lunch. Fantastic restaurant! The steak was very nicely done and the place was serene. Service was very good as well. Generally service in SA was good as we experienced. After lunch we went to a supermarket down the street to grab some groceries to stock up in case of any unexpected hunger pangs.
We aimlessly drove around and found a local crafts market! It pretty near the waterfront area of Cape Town already. They sell a lot of pretty cool stuffs inside. Tong took a long time trying to bargain down the price of some Rose Quartz and Moonstone necklaces but not to much avail. He bought them anyway though. We then tried to walk to the Green Point stadium but too far. Went back to the car and drove there. Can't really check out the place as there were a lot of road diversions and blocks. After a few rounds around the area, we went back to our guest house.
We put down our stuffs and watched Brazil Holland in the comfort of our room. After the match, we dallied around and had some tea before we decided to head out to Long Street, where all the nightlife is in Cape Town! There was a little internet cafe there and we spend about half an hour in there before heading to a pub to catch Uruguay Ghana.
With an African team playing on African soil, you would expect the support for Ghana to be tremendous and that was exactly how it was! Everyone in there, and it was really crowded, supported Ghana. Met a Zimbabwean, Australians and Canadians in there. Tong by now was already gonna KO. He can even sleep standing up! Damn funny! The atmosphere was high in there, especially when the goals are scored! Gyan's penalty miss at the end of extra time almost caused a riot....alright, I exaggerated, but that was the mood lah. In the end Uruguay won on penalties and we went back after I got a African styled hotdog from a street stall.
Tong KOed instantly!
