There are locations along our journey which have stayed in our memory as we think back over the past two months in Asia. Along with the growing list of great cities like hong kong and Saigon and beautiful towns like Hoi Ann, Luang Prahbang and Kampot we can now add the tiny island of Koh Lipe in the southern most part of Thailand.
Having anticipated this island of white sand and palm trees to be a short stopping off point between Phi Phi and Malaysia we were instantly taken aback by this tiny azur gem as we jumped off the side of the long tail boat and strode ashore with our bags. Straight away we decided to spend a few extra days in the island.
After a short struggle to find the guesthouse ( Gwenno walking around the 1mile wide island whilst Ben sat in a bar babysitting the bags, hard work for some ) we eventually settled into our bungalow, walls made from thin woven bamboo and a roof of banana leaves, with an outside cold shower, a toilet that you had to throw a bucket of water over to flush and a tiny padlock you wouldn't trust to lock an old bike up in the UK to secure the door. Amazingly we loved the place and it's chilled out setting, along with the owners dogs who Gwenno became very fond of.
Having had a taste of snorkelling in Phi Phi we priced up various excursions around the island, all were expensive so we decided to invest in a mask and snorkel each so we could explore the islands coves and reefs - the islands water is apparently home to 25% of the worlds tropical fish. Over the next few days we became very familiar with our new purchases spending a lot of time in the water peering down at the activity below - seeing a whole host of both beautiful and ugly fish.
Another advantage of the abundant fish population came at tea time when we would fill our bellies on fresh barbecued tuna and red snapper which tasted gorgeous and was so cheap. The location of the island near Muslim Malaysia meant we could also try roti pancakes and India curries in between our fishy feasts.
Sadly we heard that a storm was heading towards the island from India so we quickly booked a ferry south, otherwise we may have became stranded, addicted to the roti pancakes and accompanying mango lassi shakes and never want to leave.
