Having been really impressed with Vietnam, we crossed the land border into Cambodia, expecting more of the same nature, beauty, hospitality and people. Our first taste of cambodia came as we crossed the border at a road side cafe (this place makes the dodgey caravan cafes at the side of motorways look like michelin star restaurants) after two plates of rice, liver and pork bones we set off for Phnom Penh, which was made famous in the mid-1970's due to the Khmer Rouge regime.
After a settling in and a few drinks of the roof top bar with some fellow bus passangers we set off the following day to the khmer rouge killings fields and a school which was turner into a prison for the same regime. All very heavy stuff but great to visit and begin to understand.
Given how friendly and happy the cambodian people are, it is hard to imagine the atrocities they faced thirty years ago, with a quarter of the populations being murdered.
Whilst visiting the city we also viewed a number of temples and palaces in the run up to our three days marathon of temple seeing in Ankor Wat in Siem Reap at the start of december. All very interesting, we are particularly liking the Buddhist monks wrapped in orange shrouds smoking fags and playing on their iphones!.
