We had 2 options of travel to get from Vietnam to Laos:
1. 30 hour bus journey
2. 1 hour flight
After hearing some horror stories about the bus journey and border crossing we opted to do some 'flashpacking' (as an American girl in our dorm put it) and opted for the flight.
A group we had met in Halong Bay were travelling to Laos via bus. They were leaving the evening before us an we were still going to beat them, we were naturally quite smug about this.
The next day we made our way to the airport via taxi. Belle was behind the passenger seat and I sat behind the driver. On route I accidentally trod on his metal pole he had hidden under his seat. I instantly wondered how 'heavy' the airport run was going to be, luckily we encountered no violent road rage, or any kind of roadrage for that matter and headed into the terminal.
After checking in we made our way to a bus, which would take us to our plane. As we made our way across the tarmac we could see some smaller looking aircrafts and then one particularly small plane. We both hoped this wasn't going to be our mode of transport but as we headed straight past all the other planes it became clear it was.
The bus pulled up and we along with our fellow passengers left the bus. It was then when we both realised the plane we were boarding had propellers and was about the size of a Nissan Micra. As we boarded the plane, I say boarded, climbed the step ladder off the safety of the tarmac - the idea of a 30 hour bus journey (complete with horror story) didn't seem so bad after all!
To our delight and (unjustified) surprise the flight was smooth and we even got a inflight meal thrown in. We had landed in Laos - our 4th country of the trip.
