After a slightly questionable VVIP (as it was advertised) night bus from Cambodia we decided to give it another crack in Vietnam, this time up the coast. First from Nha Trang to Hoi An and then (currently) Hoi An to Hanoi.
And.....I'm pleased to report the night bus gamble has paid off. Although the sleeper train was good (a bed big enough for me, Matt) the Vietnamese night bus bed size (tongue twister for you) isn't half bad either. As I sit here writing this in the pitch black, I'm pretty comfy and have been on this particular bus for about 6 hours now - only another 8 to go!! The silence and air conditioning are also a great bonus, the only downside is the slightly erratic driving style our driver has selected. I think he has played too much GTA, weaving in and out of traffic, and over taking at any possible opportunity. For those who have never played GTA then it's like our friend Anton's driving style, for those who don't know Anton, think of something from Police, Camera, Action....
The roads here are not as modern and smooth as in England, with more bumps and lumps, to put it lightly. You could be in danger of thinking these unfavourable driving surfaces would cause the driver to slow down slightly.....you would be wrong. I suspect asking the driver to slow down slightly would be greeted with the same response if you tried to send Amy Winehouse to rehab! Not that I would say anything as I am 100% sure this would end with me standing in the middle of the Vietnamese country side with only the clothes I have on.
Another observation, (which is what this blog is - observations, not complaints) is that due to our drivers commitment to getting our coach airborne, I would estimate that the average life of a Vietnamese coach has got to be about 6 months - if that!! Not that I am ever going to look that up & even if I tried, I'm not sure they store that type of information anyway. Seems like a decent guess to me though and I'm sticking with it.
A fully charged iPod and an attempt at sleep calls now, partly because sleeping is pretty handy but mainly because the gentleman in the bed next to me has decided to show off his mad snoring skills.
